Correct, the pulsing LAN light happened at the exact time as the PPPoE dropped no router reboot. Now whether the router drops the Ethernet before it starts to resync I have no idea but it seems unlikely?
The only time I have had an Ethernet connection fail previously it was the wall socket prongs not making a reliable contact to the plug pins. Unplugging and replugging a new times cleared the issue, but that didn't work in this instance. Or a well used patch lead but again they were new out of the packet. I was also suspicious as it seemed to start when my FTTP was upgraded from 100 to 500 but that may just have been coincidence.

Seems very unlikely that the router would initiate a full link reset after a PPP connection drop. The other way around however makes sense.
In the first instance it will be easier for them to replace the router than getting Openreach out to replace the ONT.

can be checked obviously with a direct connection from pc to ont

Good point. However OP would beed to be prepared to leave that machine connected and wait for any flaps to happen on the link which may not happen for a few days (as evidenced).
So this arrangement could be disruptive if, with say general internet access, without some further reconfig. to share the connection.
Also that machine would need a strong / reliable / configured firewall given its directly facing the open internet with no other firewall protection and also needs PPPoE client configured - a Linux box would be ideal. A Windows box probably not the one for this job.

Any cable can be borderline on performance and still appear OK. Hardware faults do happen. It’s all within the realms of possibility.
I am not saying it is not possible, just seems unlikely, but stranger things have happened.

Umm, not really advisable, unless as said above a Linux box is used and one that is not important and can be reinstalled if needed.

I've had a Huawei ONT ethernet port fall out of gigabit capability and only connect on 100BaseT. Was a few years ago and did need an 'act of god' for good measure 😂 but did happen
Cabling issues - how long have you got? 😉

huh!!!!!!!!!!!!! that really makes no sense.
you plug a cat 5e or greater into the pc, then into the ont. configure - test and remove.
