msn/messenger blocking with LBox

hiya

does anyone know if the security settings can be set to block windows live messenger/msn?

the reason i ask is so that i can control from my PC via the config pages when my teenage daughter can use it without me having to use her laptop. i think it should be possible but don't know what ports need blocking or how to block them

However, I would suggest locking down her laptop with an admin login and configuring a software firewall to control her web access. Using something like Zonealarm and you can easily specify which applications she can use without needing to mess with your router settings - especially useful if someone else in household wants to use one of these services.

tried a few things it suggested but didn't seem to work. i was wanting to do it from the router rather than the laptop so i could turn the access off & on remotely (if you had a teenage daughter you'd realise that knocking on their door & them letting you mess about with their laptop is far easier said than done, beleive me!!!!) i wouldn't need to use these services at any other time cos she's the only one that uses them

MSN connects to port 1863 (outbound), but if this fails it will connect to port 80 (outbound). So you can't block port access to stop MSN without breaking www access at the same time.

Also kids are pretty clever (some more than the parents! ) at getting around alot of blocks parents/schools put in place, I'm sure it's a hot topic at school. There's also the browser based MSN that you can use, so you can block her using MSN standalone then she'll probably just go use the browser based one...or just use a different messnger service....be a never ending fight!

i tried blocking 1863 but it obviously used port 80 instead, i've blocked a few of the web-based MSNs such as meebo & msn2go in IE security & i don't think she's that clued up about computers to try anything too clever. i've already had 1 livebox take a trip down a flight of stairs in frustration!!! luckily i've moved house & the master socket is now in the living room. suppose i'll just have to put up with it. never mind
