please don't get too technical with me am just starting out.am on orange unlimited(completley dif story) was told my line was capeable of recieving speeds of upto 8mg by orange, virgin and tiscali. just done 1st line speed test got these results
down speed 4.4 mbps
up speed 0.4 mbps
am i right in thinking this is not as good as they promised. i understand i need to do more tests at dif times of the day for true picture.
can the pc you use affect your line speed(i did warn u i'm a novice)

Most say that they can provide 'up to 8 meg', but most of the time thats not what you get, every check I do says the same and all I can get is 2.5mb.
4.4mb is good, and is probably the highest your line can support.
Go to www.samknows.com, click on 'Availability Checker' and enter your Telephone Number and PostCode. Then click on BT ADSL and see what speed it says your line can support.

Also someone told me on here the highest reading possible you will get from speed testing sites is about 6.7mb even if everything is perfect (i.e next door to exhange, no line problems).

You are getting what they all told you "up to 8Mb".
i.e. speeds between 0 and 8Mb. It's part of the marketing speak.
Actually 4.4Mb is probably better than average across the UK as a whole so don't be too depressed.

Thats what I meant to say.
My line can only support 2-2.5mb at the moment, but with the problems at Orange, i'm only get around 0.3-0.9mb depending on the time of day.
Since the beginning of April I don't think i've recorded a speed over 1mb!!!

I don't know what Orange have done around my way but
http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/results.php?t=1180466150&v=1458726
This is peak time and speeds seems largely uneffected for me now, this has been the case for 7-10 days now, it was never even this good before we had those problems at peak time a couple of weeks back.
Hopefully yours will pick up.

OH MY GOD!!
This is the BEST speed test i've had in the past month, and its still pretty bad for a 2.5mb connection:
http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/results.php?t=1180469731&v=1459463
Edit: Just ran a few more tests and got a few speeds over 1meg, all whilst I was on the phone to Orange - spooky
Apparently, according to Livebox Technical Support, there is a known network issue that they are currenlty fixing and hope to have it fixed as soon as possible, but there is no date set for its completion!
What annoys me is that their Broadband Status page on the Orange Help site does not report any problem!

LOL
I knew it was too good to be true though, the BB is great now but went to make a phone call just after I posted that last message and there's somthing up with my VOIP Talk service now, was just getting an engaged tone at first, re booted the router and was then getting a dialling tone but not the correct one (i,e not the one with 5 little pips when you pick up phone which signifys the call is going out over the BB) meaning the call was going out over the BT network.
Hopefully sort itself out by tomorrow, don't fancy contacting Orange CS!

Fair enough but possibly an error as it's faster then 8mb even which surely isn'y possible! at least not on broadband max which is what I was infering as to the fastest speed for BB Max you will get is around 6.7mb on speed testing sites . Are you on LLU?

Cable. But I have talk to clients of mine that do get 8Mbps speeds on the online testers. Its just right now there's so much contention on the BTW network that during the day not many people do see the top speeds. But that's how its designed.
If we wanted true 1:1 8Mbps pipes, we'd have to pay

Well fair enough I was just going by what I was told by someone else that even if you're running at full speed possible on broadban MAX you wont get more than around a 6.7mb reading on testing sites.
I found the post, still don't understand fully

I checked the VOIP phone this morning and fortunately it was making the little pips before the dialling tone, so just a short term temp problem thankfully!

Second day in a row of faster speeds, though not great, all speed tests i've done are over 1.3mb!!!
