I've noticed over the last 2 days I've had slow down in browsing speeds sometimes to what seems like dial up levels (probably is a bit faster than that but am so used to broadband!). On checking the speeds on the speedtest sites my download speeds are fine (6mb+) but the upload speeds are much reduced so I assume this must have an effect on browsing. I used to get a pretty solid 350kbps+ upload speed but now the best I'm getting is aroun 240kbps and when I've really noticed a slow down in browsing, upload speeds are only around 50-70kbps (hence the much slower browsing).
Anyone else noticed anything, could I have been put on LLU? (I don't think that is the case as my exchange is pretty rural and according to sam knows not one ISP has enabled my exchange for LLU)
However, I doubt that slow upload speeds would affect your Web browsing,
The msgs sent from your PC to a server are really very short; usually more or less just a Web address, while the download traffic in the other direction is more hefty being the contents of Web pages.
What about your non-browsing experience, when it seems slow?
E.G. do large PC sent emails seem slow to leave?
I understand that "the maximum LLU upload speed is 288 Kbps whereas BT supplied MaxDSL is usually greater than that".
I think I'm on LLU despite samknows.com saying my exchange is NOT Orange LLU'd; the BT Speedtest always failing is supposed to be indicative of LLU.
I get a consistant 240 Kbps upload and downloads speeds of 5.5 - 6 Megs (thro' the free wireless router I persuaded Orange to send me; Speedtouch modem gives only 3 Meg) with a Sync Speed of 7.6 Meg.
I think I must be on LLU now, as I've tried the BT Speedster a few times and it goes straight to a error page after I enter my phone number. My upload speeds also seem to be around 240-250 now maximum as well. Fortunately the problems I mentioned seem to have ended the other day.
I did get an email a few weeks back from Orange about some upgrades and did notice an increase in download speeds from about 6.2 max to 6.9, didn't think it would be LLU though as like I said I live in a pretty rural area and no other providers have LLU'd the exchange.
Hopefully Sky will follow suit as I take Sky TV so could save a few quid with them if/when I can get their cheap LLU broadband packages.
Ah, the upgrade you got from Orange must have been about an (unstated) switch to LLU. I have never senn such an email.
Did the email about coincide with the reduction in upload speeds that you noticed?
If so, that would almost certainly confirm that they switched you to LLU; they certainly did something to your line.
I don't think samknows is very reliable/up-to-date and I have always got "Test Error The system is currently busy." from BT Speedtester.
Orange Help (KB193) says ...
=======================================================================
DNS
Note: DNS settings should be set to 'automatically obtain' - there are only rare instances where Orange settings should be used. For information, the first set of Orange DNS settings are for IPStream customers, the second set for LLU.
Domain name service is dynamic.
If connecting to a router, and need DNS settings for home networking, use the IP address or your router, i.e.192.168.1.1
If Orange domain name server (DNS) addresses are required, you should use:
195.92.195.94 and 195.92.195.95
Or, if you experience problems with the above, use:
193.36.79.101 and 193.36.79.100

My Siemens wireless router has the latter set of DNS servers, programmed, I presume, by Orange before they sent it to me. Therefore I'm on LLU!
slow browsing / web pages not being displayed on LLU can usually be fixed with a little tinkering of the MTU settings on your comp. download DRTCP (available loads of places, just google it) & try MTU setting of 1492, or lower if that doesn't fix it. can't do much about the upload speed though, LLU is slower than IPStream Max.
