Re: Orange LLU speed query

[re: XRaySpeX] [link to this post]

I'll be interested to see if your Sync improves after a few days cuz I reckon you can get nearly 18 Meg at about 1.9 Km line from exchange.

I've just done another speed test. My noise and attenuation are still the same but according to the speedchecker I've currently got...

download - 10396kbps
upload - 908.88kbps

I think that's about the best I'm going to get, but it'll do me, certainly beats the old dial-up days. I wasn't really expecting much more. Orange told me the other night that they've still got people to connect at my exchange so they've probably given me the lowest speed at the mo but may go up, depending how the equipment copes with the extra households they connect over the next few weeks.

I have a workmate who's on the Home Max package with Orange too who lives round the corner from me and he's still on IPStream - he's so jealous smile

Thought I'd give an update on my Livebox Stats now it's been a couple of weeks. They're now reading

Noise - 10.1db
Attenuation - 26.0db
Attainable d/l rate - 15676kbps
Download - 15604kbps
Upload - 1182kbps

I've just done a speedtest and it shows that my current speed is

Download - 13253.12kbps
Upload - 1113.92kbps

My download speed has now almost doubled and I'm chuffed to bits - it's a bit more than I'd expected. I don't mind paying the extra £2 p/m for this smile

Great! Your Sync at 15.5 Meg is higher than Orange's estimate but not quite as high as mine which I revise down to 17.5 Meg based on your latest attenuation.

Well, I've just upgraded to the 20 Meg Select package.

I hope I've made the right decision, in view of the impending deal with BT to take over Orange's network, but I am assured by 2 Orange CS staff that they will continue with LLU and intend to to expand its coverage from 65% to 85% of the country.

My estimated Sync on Orange's availability checker was only 9.5 Meg, but under My Account it gave 15 Meg and the CS I spoke to had it as 15.5 Meg, which accords with the 16 Meg i got from O2 recently in a trial.

My router stats (DS/US) on the old 8 Meg package were:
Speed: 8061 K/604 K, Attn: 27 dB/13 dB, SNM: 22 dB/25 dB

Initially on the new 20 Meg connection they became:
Speed: 12275 K/883 K, Attn: 27 dB/13 dB, SNM: 10 dB/14 dB

Altho' they were similar to your initial ones, I was a bit disappointed with them as with that SNM I could only see the speed increasing to at most 13.5 Meg.

However, an hour later they changed to:
Speed: 12282 K/883 K, Attn: 27 dB/13 dB, SNM: 14 dB/14 dB

This looks more promising with the higher SNM indicating I might get 15.5 Meg Sync, when it settles down.

I can only hope that after a fortnight it will settle down to a better speed like yours did.

Your stats are looking pretty good so far mate.

I've just checked my livebox stats again, and yet again they've slightly changed. In brackets I've included them when I last checked it...

Noise 9.9db (10.1db)
Att 26.5 (26)
Attainable d/l rate 16364 kbps (15676)
d/l 16289 (15604)
u/l 1170 (1182)

I think Orange has suspended LLU-ing anyone else in my area for the time being as my workmate (who's also on Orange) has been informed that Orange are not LLU'd at the exchange I share with him. He thinks that when/if everything gets transferred to BT then I'll lose my speed (he's jealous as he's still lucky to hit 5.5meg) but if I do, I have a screen dump of the page on my Orange Account which says I'm getting 13meg speeds (they didn't use the up to bit on the page like they usually do). I'll have them by the short and curlies if I drop below that and use it as a get-out of the 18month contract I'm now tied into so I can jump ship to another ISP if necessary without any penalties (I hope!).

Getting there! After 2 days with 1 stabilisation reset per day at about 6 PM:

Speed: 15795 K/1196 K, Attn: 27 dB/13 dB, SNM: 10 dB/5 dB

Yes, it looks like Orange's stabilisation period consists of starting you at a lowish Sync (actually highish NM) and increasing (decreasing NM) it daily for as long as you stay stable. Unlike O2 which starts at a high Sync (actually low, 6 dB, NM) and decreasing it while you are unstable.

I 've been assured by 2 Orange CSs that they are not getting rid of LLU and 20 Meg BB and that their deal with BT will enable them to increase their LLU coverage from 65% to 85% of the country, as well as BT taking over their Backhaul and making it easier for users on non-BT phone lines on full LLU with other ISPs to get them back to BT lines so Orange can easier offer them BB. Otherwise I would not have re-contracted. They cannot just bump us back to 8 Meg from 16 Meg once we have signed up.
