Orange DNS problems

[link to this post]

I work for a company which runs a number of websites, and we recently made some DNS changes to our sites which should not have caused a problem for any of our customers. Indeed, most customers were fine, but a few customers suddenly couldn't get to our sites. We quickly found that all the customers with problems were using Orange broadband (regular broadband and also mobile broadband), and we've now had dozens of Orange customers with the same problem - it seems to be affecting everyone on Orange but nobody else.

After some investigation it became apparent that Orange's DNS cache servers, which are assigned to all Orange customers, had got the wrong DNS information and were failing to give customers access to our sites. I confirmed this by getting a couple of customers to do nslookup commands which showed the problem was with Orange's DNS cache servers (cache0.orange.net and cache1.orange.ne), and I double-checked this by getting a couple of customers to bypass the Orange DNS cache servers with the Google Public DNS service - after they did this the problems went away completely.

At this point I filled in the contact form on Orange's website to let their technical support know about the problem. I got an email back saying they weren't going to investigate because we weren't a customer. So, I set up an Orange mobile broadband account and got a dongle - as expected, I wasn't able to get to our websites via the Orange connection even though I could see sites such as Google etc. So, now that I was a customer, I phoned up their technical support for mobile broadband, only to be told - after a long discussion - that there was nothing they could do and that I'd have to go back to the Orange website and fill in the contact form on there. So I filled in this form again and explained all the problems in detail. This was at 6pm last night and I've had no response at all.

Additionally, there's a person from some frontline customer support department who got in touch with us after one of our customers with Orange complained to him that they couldn't get to our sites. He seemed quite concerned for a while and he tried to pass the problem over to their tech team, but although I keep asking him for updates he's gone quiet now and, although I supplied him with all the technical details necessary to show him that the problem was with Orange's DNS cache servers, still nothing has been done and I've been given no indication of whether anyone technical at Orange has even started to look at the problem.

This problem has now been going on for over a week. I've been telling Orange about the problem using every method available to me, and many of our customers who are on Orange have also been contacting Orange to tell them about the problem and ask when it's going to be resolved. There has been absolutely no response from Orange and nothing done at all in all this time. It's bad enough that Orange's DNS cache servers are obviously broken and severely affecting all our customers, but to fail to fix the problem or to even provide any sort of helpful response regarding the problem is, in my view, absolutely appalling.

If any Orange customers reading this are curious about the problem and have a spare moment, please try to visit http://www.uk.castingcallpro.com/ and see whether you can get to the site. (We have many other sites too, but this is one of our main sites.) I'd be really interested to see whether _anyone_ on Orange can get to it. Bear in mind that this site is visible to all Internet users not on Orange!

I'd also be interested to know if anyone on Orange has had similar problems with failing to get to specific sites that were available from other Internet Service Providers. Additionally, does anyone know of any person in department in Orange that might be able to help, and if so how might I contact them?

Agreed! I can't get to your quoted link, while I'm on Orange's DNSs: 193.36.79.100 & 193.36.79.101.

I had to switch out my mix-and-match OpenDNS and reboot both PC and router before it would fail. Now I reinstated just a single OpenDNS, it works again.

I am on orange mate and have tried your link. You are right that indeed I can not view it.
Not that it is relevant but I am having some poor customer service issues with them also and I feel like banging my head against a wall.
My next step is trading standards. Their customer service is appalling.
To cap it all a friend of mine is with orange and is having issues with them also. He seems to think it is since they have gone in with T-Mobile.
I have been with them for a number of years and have been very happy until recentley.

I was with Orange for years, the DNS problem happened with great frequency. Their customer service is non-existent.

Sorry I can't help.

PS I'm now with ZEN - no issues.

Thanks, guys, for taking the time to try the link and for giving feedback on what happened. It's good to have confirmation that it seems to be all Orange customers affected and that they can bypass the problem with an alternative DNS provider such as OpenDNS or Google Public DNS. It's also interesting to hear that Orange have had other similar DNS problems in the past - given how broken their DNS cache seems to be, I guess that's not really surprising.

Their customer support does indeed seem to be exceptionally bad. The only reason we're getting anywhere with them at all is because we've been lucky enough to get on our side an extremely helpful chap on their support frontline who is battling hard against the company's total disinterest to try and resolve this problem. He's managed to progress things to the point where there's now a fault reference assigned to our problem, which I assume means it will actually get investigated at some point.

We're now on our ninth day of this problem and still the problem seems to be a long way from getting solved. And I still haven't heard back from my own support request which I submitted the day before yesterday. To be honest I am lost for words at how indescribably poor Orange's response has been. It's absolutely staggering.

Orange are not alone in this. It happens frequently with other ISPs; O2 users report here often with DNS failures.

The answer with any ISP is to use independent DNSs, like OpenDNS, or, as I do, mix-and match an OpenDNS with one of your ISPs, to get best of both worlds.

I'm surprised if many people are reporting DNS problems with O2. I use them as my ISP at home, and there was a phase about a year ago when their DNS servers were a bit slow occasionally, but that's long since past and I've certainly never lost the ability to get to specific sites because of DNS caching problems. O2's service is generally excellent.

I agree that it's easier for some people to get around these problems by running their own DNS cache or by using a public DNS service, but many of our customers simply do not have the technical skills that you and I have, and as such they could have problems setting up these types of solutions. Also I don't think they should have to fiddle around with the DNS settings on their computer - there's absolutely no reason why an ISP such as Orange can't provide a DNS cache which works properly, and there's also no reason why they can't respond quickly and helpfully when it's been demonstrated that their DNS cache is not working properly. Unfortunately Orange fail very badly on both counts.

I've not experienced nor heard of any DNS problems with O2 for a very long time either.

Just tried your link and servers have failed at the moment:

Nameserver trace for www.uk.castingcallpro.com:

* Looking for who is responsible for root zone and followed h.root-servers.net.
* Looking for who is responsible for com and followed g.gtld-servers.net.
* Looking for who is responsible for castingcallpro.com and followed dns249.d.register.com.

Nameservers for www.uk.castingcallpro.com:

* dns092.a.register.com
* dns125.b.register.com returned (SERVFAIL)
* dns229.c.register.com
* dns249.d.register.com returned (SERVFAIL)

It was working for me OK yesterday. I use an Orange DNS - primary and an Open DNS - secondary one. Both set up in TCP/IP in WinXP Pro. My Orange LiveBox does not allow for DNS changes.
