Is speed being capped - help!

Can someone help?

Had a BT engineer out last week after having a problem with the master socket, he was very helpful, fixed the problem and fitted an iPlate.

We looked at the downstream rate on the Router, which was 3500kbps (which I know it has been about this for a long time) down, 448 up & and downstream noise margin of 6db. I mentioned that I am mostly getting speeds of between 1 & 2 mb, but sometimes lower. He said that I should be getting about 3mb and suggested that I contact Orange as I am getting less, might be that they have capped it?

So, called the call centre who said that I should be getting up to 2mb. They asked me for the downstream rate on the router, took the results of the test that I had taken and said they would do a line test and update me.

So, they sent me an sms to call them back on a premium rate line to be told that I should be getting up to 1 MB! Checked the router, downstream rate is 2272, up is 288 and noise margin 14db and speed test show about 1mb.

Is the solution when you complain about speed to cap the speed further!...any idea's on what should I do?

Yeah! But what is your downstream attenuation and Mode? Only with this can we tell if you are getting what you should. Post your router stats. Are you on LLU or IPStream?

Hi, please see the stats below. Not sure if i'm LLU or Ipstream. Orange recently gone LLU at the exchange (Burnham), but have never been notified by orange, so suspect still IPstream.

That looks like fixed rate 2Mb to me, so I would guess BT.

The download speed suggests that it is a capped 2.2mb product, so for some reason they may have swapped you onto a different product,

"Line mode: G.992.1 (G.DMT)" confirms you are still on IPStream, but you are only getting about 1/2 of what line is capable of.

Thanks XRaySpeX, so what is the line capable of? Is it the 3mb the BT engineer said when I was getting 3500kbps downstream or is it about 2mb.

Then how do I get Orange to give me what the line is capable, rather than cap me further as they appear to of?

The BT engineer was mainly right, except the slow speeds arnt actually a fault.

It's caused by a traffic jam at the Orange end ( same like a road, if its busy you get traffic jams and slow speeds ).

If you had tested your speed at 2am during a week night, you would of found you had 3mb as per the estimate by the BT engineer.

You need to call Orange and ask them to reset your bras profile, let it settle down for 2 weeks and then do a speed test at 2am.

2 x 2272 = 4 Meg approx.

It's a fixed 2M product as indicated by the upstream sync.
