Low Download Speed, But Weird???

[link to this post]

I have posted the key stats from my router (Netgear DGN1000) below:

Downstream / Upstream
Connection Speed 7032 Kbps / 1091 Kbps
Line Attenuation 46.9 dB / 27.4 dB
Noise Margin 2.8 dB / 5.3 dB
Operating Sys XP

I live about 1m away from the Gipsy Hill exchange and should be getting actual download speeds of c4.5mbps, based on previous history here (using O2 as ISP) and this was also confirmed by Orange when I signed over a few weeks ago. Although the router appears to be ok from what I can tell, I am only getting actual download speeds (verified through this site) of c1.3mbps. Upload is fine at c0.9mbps.

I'm completely baffled about whats happening, worried even that it may be some kind of configuration issue. Can anybody help?

Thanks

IP Profile is 6203Kbps

I have just retested the speed and now just crept over 3Mbps @ 23:45. My earlier tests at 1.3 Mbps were run between 20:00 and 22:00

Just retested again @ 00:35 and getting an unheard of 5.7Mbps

Thanks

Speed estimates quoted by Orange, and most ISPs, are of connection/sync speeds, not throughput.

You are getting good sync speed; your problem is with congestion/contention.

Congestion on the ISP side of things is most likely cause then

Thanks, that does make sense.

I have e-mailed their technical support (not holding out too much hope) asking them what they intend to do about a problem that is clearly of their making ( I was getting a steady 4.5mbps with 02 with little more than 10% degredation at peak times).

I'm assuming that ultimately I can cancel my contract if they cannot provide a service as specified / my line is capable of?

You'll have fun proving that it falls foul of the contract

Hi, my download speed drops from nearly 15 Meg @ low usage time, to less than 1 meg between 7.30pm & 10pm most days. It's been thoroughly investigated by Orange & BT OpenReach, and now I've eventually been told it's traffic management due to the densely populated area, combined with high rate of broadband users per population. Also high rate of download activity per number of broadband users.
I was more or less advised, that if I wanted a better average download speed during peak times, then the only alternative was to switch to an ISP who could meet this requirement. So MAC number was requested yesterday, and we are off to one of the big ISPs, along with phone rental, plus calls.
I am paying more, but negotiated a lower deal compared to National advertised rates. Also woulld like to take this opportunity to thank Xray, and many others on this Orange section of thinkbroadband for their help and support.
I'm sure Xray would like to comment on my final set of Router Stats wink

Sounds more like congestion/contention from their description rather than deliberate traffic management. Remind me which exchange?

How long overall did it take to come to this conclusion? Took them 3 months to sort out my sync speed. Now it's rock solid smile.

Which is the lucky new ISP? From those reasons it would seem better to go to a small ISP who could meet your requirements.

Told you nothing could be done at your house and the answer lay in the exchange grin

Why post this in someone else's thread and not one of your many?

Good luck with new ISP! Hope you get what you are hoping for. (I don't wanna see you back here with the same issue.)
