Speed changes after upgrading from starter 1Mb

Has anyone tried to upgrade from Starter 1Mbps to Starter 2Mbps at the same monthly cost? I requested this on Tue 5 Dec and got my download speed increased from nominal 1152kbps to 2272kbps on Fri 8 Dec, with a new 12-month contract starting from the change date, but the upload speed is unchanged at 288kbps. To keep the same 4:1 ratio, upload speed should now be 568kbps.
I use an Alcatel SpeedTouch PCI modem which can go at up to 8Mbps down and 1Mbps up without any mods to software or hardware.
In an email Orange said that my upload speed cannot be increased unless I go for Broadband Unlimited at extra cost. Is this really true? What do other ISPs offer for

You are connected via BT Wholesale's IPStream product, max up, infact the only upstream speed is 256Kbps, that why you see 288. Kinda lame I know but it looks like you're stuck on that unless you want to go with ADSL Max since Orange don't have thier LLU gear setup on your exchange.

IPStream MAX is avalaible on Oranges Plus and 'Unlimited' packages as far as I know.

Thanks bluebean. It's not worth paying any more until I can get at least 6Mbps down and about 1.5Mbps up. I'll keep checking available speed for my line from various sites as they don't all tell the same story!

Further to mine above, what has happened to Orange's Available Line Speed test page, where you put in your phone number and it tells you what line speed they can give you? Has it been removed or just deeply buried? {EDIT: or perhaps it doesn't appear if you already have Orange Broadband?} Help please: a link would suffice. BT's corresponding page tells me I can have BT Max at 8Mbps. Would Orange be able to do the same?
