Stuck with orange

[link to this post]

My line stats are :-

Down line att 49db SNR 22db
Up line att 31db SNR 28db

Connection speed 2mb / 288kps

I called orange tech support and they told me that 2mb is the maximum my line can support, which it clearly isnt. So after telling them my line stats, they said that they cant do anything because they go on what BT tell them.

So if anyone can give me any ideas what to do next.

THanks.

goto the BT website and check your number there. Also goto http://www.dslzoneuk.net/ and click on the MAX line checker to see what you can get with your stats

1) If your line sync rate is at present 2Mbps with a S/N margin of 22dB, and given a line attenuation of 49dB then if you were on ADSLMax I would expect you to sync at approx 6-6.5 Mbps with a S/N margin in excess of 6dB

2) Request your MAC code?

bt says on there line checker:-
Our initial test on your phone line indicates that you should be able to have BT Total Broadband with a likely maximum speed of up to 2.5Mb (Megabits per second).

Please note that this speed is only an estimate based on information available to us about the length of your phone line. Your actual speed will additionally depend on factors within your home, principally the length and quality of any internal phone wiring, and the speed of your computer and modem or router
on dsl:-
Based on the values you entered, we estimate that your line can support around 5.4 - 6.2 Mbps.

Even the router tells me that the maximum bitrate attainable is 6.1Mbs....but orange told that they set the line to what BT tells them.
Is there anyway to get them to increase this to the correct speeds.....cant get out of contract with them when upgraded speed from 1mb to unlimited i entered into another 12 month contract.

so if anyone has ideas !

Your download speed of 288kps tells us that you are on a fixed rate connection, not a variable rate "up-to-8-Meg ADSL Max" connection. The fastest possible fixed rate connection is 2 Meg, so Orange are right, up to a point.

It used to Orange's policy to put everyone who wasn't on an Orange LLU exchange on a 2Meg fixed rate (or slower if you couldn't cope with 2Meg). Several people have posted on this site that this policy has changed and Orange will now provide the up-to-8-Meg ADSL Max on non-LLU exchanges.

Your best policy is to pursue Orange support to get your line converted from 2Meg fixed rate to ADSLMax variable rate. And hope that Orange's policy really has changed.

Hi pjclews2004 if you are out of contract find a decent provider they did similar to me telling me i had a fault on my line call back every 24 hrs etc for 3 months i never got anywhere with this excuse for an ISP then when i asked for a MAC code thats when my real problems started until i contacted the ISPA they got me a MAC i migrated away and never had a problem since and there was no fault on my line whatsoever.

Firstly, what package you on? If you are on the starter pack then they only give you 2mbps. If you are on Unlimited then

Login to the members centre and select:

-> change your broadband package or speed.
->change your speed

to See if you can go faster. If you get a message that says you currently have 2mbps but you can upgrade to xx.xxx mbps then select it! (even if the value is marked a lower value)

I had a 1mbps connection but I could upgrade to 0.5mpbs (however they didn't say that that was ADSL MAX! )

I had a the sample issue looked at my stats and I could get 4.5mpbs on ADSL MAX. After ordering the Upgrade to 0.5mpbs. I called the CS and confirmed that the order that had been sent to BT was IP Stream MAX service and It was!!!. I now connect between 3-5 mbps.
