speed test

[link to this post]

Would anyone know what speed I am getting from the following results taken from test on this site?

Speed Test Results
Date 26/03/07 11:49:10
Speed Down 473.61 Kbps ( 0.5 Mbps )
Speed Up 242.93 Kbps ( 0.2 Mbps )
IP Address 84.64.148.195

I am told my package is 512k even though I upgraded to 2mb a year ago, which they say I couldn't get at the time, but can now. I'm told that, to increase my speed, I can upgrade to 6mb but would need to sign up to 12 month contract.

Like others on here, I originally started off with Freeserve more than 6 years ago, following through the changes of name.

Also, like others, most times my connection has gone down to that of a dial up connection, though it was really fast when I upgraded. Admittedly, I have got my son's pc on a network now which would slow it down a bit, but even when he's not online my speed has deteriorated.

Also I have a Netgear router which is set up for my network and took ages to get working. I am thinking of upgrading to the 6 mb with Orange, but would I definitely need to use their livebox or can I just take the speed upgrade and keep my router, not connecting the livebox up?

Any advice would be good please

Thanks

Those figures suggests your connection is only 512k.

When you say 6mb, you mean Max broadband "up to 8mb"? You can't get 6mb product, MAX broadband may give you 6mb (or more, or less) depending on your line stats.

Apparently Orange are experiencing alot of problems (slow speeds) with their LLU exchanges, worth checking here to see if Orange have LLU your exhange :

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php

Might want to consider moving elsewhere if they have but if you stay with Orange, you don't have to use the Livebox you can use your own router if you want, though you wont beable to use the Free VOIP phone calls unless you use the livebox.

Thanks for the reply and your help.

So the speedtest donates 512k, as I've been told I'm getting. Obviously this will alter downwards when my son is also online.

Sorry, I should have said Max broadband. They've said I can get up to 6 meg, which I don't think I can. I'm really annoyed that I signed up for 2mb (which they didn't bother to tell me I couldn't get) so remained on 512k which is what I was getting before the upgrade. I wasn't aware that I wasn't getting the full 2mb till recently.

Funnily enough, until I actually checked my package a few weeks ago, (my first check showing current package up to 2mb, receiving 512k) after my contact with them querying why I wasn't getting the correct speed, as per my upgrade, this suddenly disappeared and now shows my package as 512k. In hindsight I wish I'd copied the page from my first check. I have no proof that the information on their site changed after my query.

I've checked on samknows and Orange has not got LLU for my area.

The other information I got from the site is:

2.14lkm from exchange (straight line distance

ADSL: can receive up to 2 mbs (Orange say I can get up to 6mbs)

SDSL: Not available

21CN PSTN: Available Oct-Dec. 2010

21CN IP Available Jan-Mar 2011

I really didn't fancy moving provider, having read so many stories of others changing ISP and having problems with connections, etc.

Regards using my router, as I'm not interest in Free VOIP calls, your advice has helped there.

I'm (understandably, I feel) annoyed that I upgraded in late 2005 to 2mb, only to discover that my speed hadn't changed from previously, but got a 12 month contract, and now, to increase to the 2mb I thought I was getting, I need to upgrade to full package and sign up for 12 months. Admittedly it's cheaper than the

THX for that info. That would explain my "up to 8 mb" being for the last few weeks pretty much like that:

Date 26/03/07 18:37:55
Speed Down 1884.06 Kbps ( 1.8 Mbps )
Speed Up 241.11 Kbps ( 0.2 Mbps )

and this morning Orange rep suggested "upgrade that might help" for extending my contract for another 12 months.Have been with them since 1998 but I guess it is really time to look for another ISP

This site should give you estimation on what sort of speeds you will beable to get with Max broadband :

http://www.dslzoneuk.net/maxspeed.php

You need to access your router settings to find the 'Downstream Attenuation' and SNR.

I wouldn't totally rule out the livebox and the VOIP calls, gives you unlimited calls to all 01/02 and loads of other countries so a potential money saver, and all seems to work ok nice clear calls just like normal phone. Also the livebox is a wireless router (+2 ethernet wired ports) so usefull if you've got a wiresless enabled laptop or are going to get one. I'm not much of an expert on routers but it seems to be OK.

Well this is what I've been told by other people, but it seems the case I think I read 2.7mb or something around that is the fastest you will currently get on LLU. I only signed up to Orange a few weeks back and only did cause I'm not on an LLU exchange.

Don't want to make you feel jealous but I get speeds around 6mb most of the time, even at peak times it goes along around 3-4mb. Like I say I'm not on LLU.

I think just Orange. Don't ask me why 2.7 but I've seen that figure mentioned a few times here and over on the orangeproblems site.

Thanks for the link. Just one thing though. How do I access my router settings for the downstream attenuation & SNR. I've checked out everything I can think of but haven't been able to find anything that allows me to see the settings.

I've read on here that other people have had the Livebox and had loads of trouble. I had enough of that when I tried to set up my router. Took 3 weeks. Recently had problem when my son's pc lost connection to internet through router and had to get in outside help.

OMG! Son has just informed me that he's lost connection again. Aaarrgghh!. Looks like I'll be needing that help again.

So, as you can see, I really don't want to go out looking for more problems.

Hi I take it you know how to access the admin settings in the router?

This might help anyway, just select your router (if it's there, but all the main makes are) :

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.htm

I can't speak for anyone else but I must say the livebox was very easy to set up with clear detailed instructions, and I've not had any problems with it.
