Re: Orange blocking access to Ryanair.com?

I am connecting via the 81.76.16. range. Earlier today my IP address started with 84
I suspect this could be related to the routing from here.

In reply to:

How would that explain being able to connect using the same router but another ISP's DNS server?

Sorry I didn't think about that - was just trying to help.

Apologies for the `tone` it wasn't meant to come over like that. Help very much appreciated.

Orange are running a trial right now, in partnership with a company called bearfruit.

IMO this company and its business model are quite unethical, or at best very sketchy.

What they do is forward you to a page full of spamy ads if a domain lookup fails. You could ask if you were included in the 1000 or so Orange users on the trail, but I dunno if the monkey answering the phone will have a clue WTF I'm even talking about :P (you know how it is).

Since changing your DNS server addresses seems to have fixed it, its the only explanation I can come up with.

Have you checked out OpenDNS? (opendns.com). They're basicly a drop in replacement for crummy ISP DNS servers. They're run by "the community" and don't seem to be totally money grabbing. Their DNS servers are reasonably quick from inside the UK, but they're no replacement for a good ISP run service unfortunately

What I do TBH is run a full blown DNS server from home because I was fed up of PlusNet's lame excuse for a DNS service.

I assume you mean trial?

Nothing appears (adverts or otherwise) when DNS resolving fails so I would suggest you are well off the mark.

I had this reply from Orange - I suspect no one will be surprised -

"This error is displayed when the server which holds the webpage you're trying to access doesn't respond in the time allowed. Please try again later, if the problem continues you need to contact the publisher of the site you're trying to view."

It beggars belief.

I did indeed mean trial.

I wasn't suggesting you were being served ads though. What I mean is there may have been some fault with that service. I don't really know the particulars about how its working. I susspect that the DNS requests for the users on the trial[b/] are forwarded to a difference name server.

It could be that this server is having some issues.. Since it is only in testing still.

Only way for me to access the site is to go through somewhere like http://www.hidemyass.com/ then the site loads fine.

What next? Orange block their homepage to their own customers?
