Because the PS3's wireless chip and/or firmware / software (as far as I understand) is too cheap and rather poo. I had trouble getting it to work with my router, as well as the PSP, which shows Sony to be the weak link. Try allowing WPA (revision 1, rather than WPA-2) mode (preferably dual WPA1-WPA2 so if WPA-2 supported it will use the superior encryption). Then see if the PS3 likes it better. Of course, encryption off will probably make it go best, but that's not an option, so manufacturers are obliged to get their products working under proper encryption as a minimum, as far as my return-to-vendor decision making process goes.
