In reply to a post by MrSaffron:
If it were wireless slowing down, then VPN would also be affected assuming running over the same wireless link.

Hence why knowing what protocol the downloads use is important

Sure that would all WLAN traffic smile

I would expect to have some slow down in the speed when downloading of an evening, but to they cut the download option off completely for newsgroups?

Depends on what others are also doing I suspect, i.e. they set aside X Mbps of their total capacity, and if lots of people are using newsgroups (NNTP) then things will be slow

Given how providers throttle things then yes this effect is not unusual.

In short if the effect is reproducible every day and standard HTTP downloads are fine, then traffic management is the cause.

Yes i'm afraid that was my concern, what providers out there are best to use if you are using newsgroups?

Which means you want to know who does not use traffic mangement?

Sky on their LLU service if you want it cheap and unlimited.
