My ports are -
incoming - 995
Outgoing - 587
My authentication settings IS TICKED

I even have my mail sent to my phone as well and again us the same outgoing settings

Thank you for your most informative reply. But may I know which SMTP server you are using? I presume your authentication means giving your EE username and password.

YOU ARE AN ABSOLUTE STAR. Using port 587 instead of 25 was the answer. Thank you VERY MUCH for your help.

SMTP authentication is used for those occasions when NOT corrected the EE network, or don't you ever take your laptop out of the house?
Ah, OK! I was assuming you were talking about when you connected via EE ISP. Yes, you would need authentication ON with your EE username & password when you are not and provided the ISP you were using did not block port 25.

Port 587 on which server? smtp.orangehome.co.uk? That doesn't work!

Were you saying that EE SMTP stopped working just when you were away from home? That would make sense as not all ISPs allow port 25. If, so why didn't you make that clear? It is a very relevant fact.

Those settings are probably OK always assuming you are using the email address provided by orange/wanadoo etc but WILL require tweaking, or a fundamental change to the SMTP settings, when using your own domain name email address.

I would like to hear from someone using orange's SMTP who has this requirement and has no problems.
Me! I use Orange's SMTP when at home for my Tiscali a/c and others. My settings are:
Email addy: Me@Tiscali.co.uk
Incoming server: pop.tiscali.co.uk Port 110
Outgoing server: smtp.orangehome.co.uk Port 25 Auth OFF or ON with EE username/pwd doesn't matter.

Of course, when away from home is entirely a diff matter and it will not work if the away ISP blocks port 25 and EE does not provide an alternative port.

I don't use my EE/Orange e-mail address, and i never used the e-mail address i was provided with from TT or Post Office.
With having my own domain name I use the settings given to me by 1&1 who host my domain
So its incoming pop.1and1.co.uk - Port 995
Outgoing auth.smtp.1and.co.uk - Port 587
My authentication settings IS TICKED

Oh, I see, this has no relevance to using the Orange SMTP, which the OP as asking about. Of course yours works with 1&1's servers.

I was asking trolleybus what his port 587 referred to.

Of course it is and relevant fact so to be ablesolutely clear three different tests were in progress all with SMTP authentication via port 25
1) Connected to my phone line
2) Using a friends connection on TalkTalk
3) Via a wireless dongle connected to Vodafone

Never had a problem before but since Friday sending out emails timed out no matter which connection was used. Just changing the port from 25 to 587 and connections via TalkTalk and Vodafone sprang into life but not using the home line.

However switching back to port 25 and everything now works just fine. So clearly there has been an outage of some kind that was affecting my use of orange's SMTP server on port 25. So the case is now closed.

Ah, I see! Very interesting!

Yes, you can use Port 587 on smtp.orangehome.co.uk with SSL OFF and it will work on any ISP, incl. at home, even those that block Port 25. I thought it didn't work cuz I had been testing it with SSL ON.

It's a pure coincidence that it is the same port # as millar_keith's who was using 1&1's SMTP.

Well done for finding this smile
