Re: Fibre, cause of connection issue?

[re: XRaySpeX] [link to this post]

Thanks. I'll pray they update my BrightBox to fix the MTU size and the recently talked about security problems. It has been off the network close to 2 years and is running the original firmware it came with.

The attenuation was about the 42dB mark on the downstream on the ADSL 8mb. It now seems to be hanging around the the 47dB mark now, due to the change?

Usually ADSL2+ attenuation ~= ADSL attenuation + 3dB.

Ok got it. So a fairly normal increase given the line is not perfect to start with. I'll see how I get on with the BrightBox, thanks again.

Thanks, I'm already using most of those settings.

I recall that going manual can be a little faster especially if you define a much faster DNS server. Do you have any idea why am I getting automatic DNS server IPs of 87.237.17.198 and 87.237.17.166 when EE say to use the two you mention? Surely they should be automatically assigning the two you mention?

MTU (576~1500): 1500
I got my BrightBox in the first few months that it was on release. It had problems holding the line which was at the time on 8Mb MaxDSL on a 20CN exchange. I stopped using it and used the supplied DGN1000SP instead. As a result it has only just been dug out to check that the ADSL mode is ADSL2+ since they upgraded the exchange and have been messing with my line without telling me. It has only been on for a couple of days since early 2012 and has not received more recent firmware updates. As a result the MTU is limited.

MTU range is 576~1492 and is set to 1492. There was a hack that revealed a hidden admin page that allowed you to set it to 1500, but I recall there was some debate as to whether the BrightBox actually took any notice and was still using 1492. I never discovered if it worked. I'd rather EE update the BrightBox and allow me to change it to 1500 properly.

Come on EE!

Since we moved from Orange LLU to BT WBC ADSL2+ I have always used MTU: 1500. EE still recommend the MTU: 1492

MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit)

In case of problems with a third party router, change MTU to 1492

It was not fully tested and proved to not work. It was withdrawn by author. Don't worry too much about 8 bytes.

I'll try to get over it wink

Interesting that FTTC is suddenly not available again.

Useful link but it doesn't help me much. I can't use 1500 as the Orange/EE supplied BrightBox won't support it, it only goes up to 1492. I need a firmware update to get 1500, and I have no control over when they will get round to that.
