Correct, but either way, fastest server is not my choice is it.

I am quite capable of looking at router stats for sync speed et al , but that has little to do with actual throughput, contention and the way which various sites conduct a speed test, which was the subject matter.

it being Speedtest net that chose the server, it being the fastest.
No, if you let Speedtest net choose, it chooses on basis of Ping not speed. In your case it chose one 200 mls away as shown in the links you posted.

You can choose whichever server you want by hovering your cursor over map and selecting one near you or setting your preferred server in the Settings

1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up => 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB => 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB => 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU => 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU => 2011: Orange 20 Meg WBC

I think in the first instance speedtest.net selects a starting location based on ip geolocation, then it picks a selection of servers in that area and selects one based on ping.

In my case it currently thinks I'm somewhere near York, when I'm actually in East Sussex. It's normally pretty accurate with my IP's location though.

Oliver.

How many more times Mr. Know-all "YOU KNOW VERY WELL" I am not 200 miles from that server, whichever location I am at. I am talking the useless EE at the moment, so you "KNOW VERY WELL" where I am!

It's surprising what a tongue in cheek remark about a useless ISP can morph into.

I haven't the faintest idea where you are and I don't really care. I was just remarking on the distance Speedtest.net reports you are from its server.

You do blow your top at every at every innocent remark.

You can't control or even predict what a thread might morph into.

If you were half as smart as you think you are, and were half awake when this useless Orange connection was last discussed, you would know where am. Plus you would remember accusing ME of choosing a server 200 miles away. Like you, the Speedtest server is MORE than 200 miles out.

You do blow your top at every at every innocent remark.

No - Only when nit-picking oiks like you turn up to find fault with every word posted.

You can't control or even predict what a thread might morph into.

You can if an idiot turns up.

Because affording was the reason to switch from BT to the rubbish Orange. Unlimited BB & LL + 1,000 mobile minutes for £22, plus the bonus of being surrounded by morons that claim NO customer service dept and locked in for months. Not for me I'm afraid.
