In my experience (in our village in which TT has LLU presence) I have found that 1400 works best. Some of the time https traffic does not even get through until I drop the MTU from the TT recommended setting of 1492 to 1400. I think that the https traffic is being broken by having it's packets fragmented.

For my Orange/EE (BT) line my router's MTU setting is 1500

Had EE Brightbox plugged in and I have just switched from EE to TalkTalk. I didn't even notice the service had switched, but the connection was still working!
Got marginally better performance from the TalkTalk router, though.

Yes, since my original reply I was corrected that TT doesn't use username/pwd. So Brightboxes will work on TT connections but not on most others which do check a username/pwd.

I used glossywhite's instructions a few weeks ago to successfully and easily change the username and password on a Brightbox for someone who wanted to use it on another ISP. It worked straightaway for ADSL and only took a few minutes of trial and error to adapt it for FTTC. So I can vouch that it works.
