There comes a time when we as a studio have to choose where to best put our efforts. At DICE were dedicated to taking care of our products after launch, and also hell bent on building new, innovative and high quality games.
In my day to day work, I look at our release schedule and the studios capacity, weighing them against our wild ambitions to create awesomeness. I often need to make hard calls regarding where we put the studios focus. Part of the challenge is to balance work on the new against the already shipped, prioritizing the amount of energy spent on the known franchises and the time spent on developing something entirely new.
This is one of those cross roads where I need to make a hard decision. While well continue supporting Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and previous games, its time to look ahead to the next giant leap for DICE the release of Battlefield 3, powered by the mighty Frostbite 2 engine. Our goal is crystal clear: were going to build the best Battlefield game ever, and well do whatever it takes to make this the biggest launch in DICEs history.
We know some of you eagerly have been awaiting Battlefield 1943 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Onslaught on PC. Im sad to say that these two titles are now officially cancelled. Instead, our talented teams will focus on delivering the greatest possible gaming experience in our next behemoth release. Were confident this will lead to an even better experience in Battlefield 3, not only on PC, but on all platforms.
For an idea of what that means, watch this space for some exciting news I think youll like.
Best regards,
Karl Magnus Troedsson

OHNOES WHATEVER SHALL WE DO!!!!!!!!!!!!
On a more serious note i'd have been surprised if it actually shown up.

To be honest I thought they never had inteneded to give PC users onslaught so that isn't a loss to me. Kind of a shame about 1943 but I was expecting that a year ago so thought that had been knocked on the head. So not much has changed in my eyes

I can kinda understand the reasoning for onslaught not appearing, it meant 4 people would clog a whole 32 man sever.
|
|
|
As opposed to a laggy 32 man server
Remember we already have squad DM can be only 8 man, and surely you just half that and you have onslaught.
Pft, the mess of BC2 (which in itself when it works is a good game) has put me off BF3, might just reinstall BF2 or 1942 and play that online just to 1up EA and Dice. *shakes fist*

BC2 is not bad for what it is, a console game half done for the pc.1943 and onsalught being cancelled is not that bad, 1943 was never really coming out as progress and news was limited.
Onslaught is really too small for BC2 PC as we already have the teamwork, the lighting effects would be nice but considering how long it is till BF3 comes and 64 players its worth the loss.
BF3 will have the PC as the lead game so dont loose faith in DICE and EA yet.

Looking at the details coming through:
* Prone and spotting are in
* Dolphin diving is out
* PC version can handle 64-player matches; consoles are restricted to 24 players
* The bullet drop system is being revamped
* No more tracer darts
Woooooooooooow 24 on a console 64 on pc, yeeeeeeeah ill be def getting the pc one, bf3 on a console will be a shadow of the pc version.

And no sign of an SDK or Map editor, woot Vietnam died a gorey death with it's epic 5 maps.
*sigh* not touching BF3 till a map editor is announced otherwise they have killed it before it ships to be honest. Lack of new maps makes BC2 and it's addon boring.

TBH they need a map editor out there. If they don't do one now they will never get to do one, yes it requires development time but name something that didnt? stupid DICE.
Theyre probably limiting themselves too because by making all this backend guff so complicated they can't license it out which means they can't be earning some pennies off it.

Were you expecting many more maps? BF3 isn't out until Sept/Oct I guess (if it doesn't slip) so we might get another 1 or 2 maps but given that they can't convert the SP maps like they could in BC2 even that might be asking a bit much.
It is a £10 add-on and for it you got new weapons, maps and vehicles. If you look at things like the add-ons for mw2 which were about £10 as well you got 5 maps (2 re-hashes of CoD4 maps) for your money. I know which I think is better value for money

I remember reading something pre-BC2 release saying that they didn't have a map editor themselves! Would be nice to have one but I am not holding my breath tbh. I think the days of map editors for FPS games is nearing an end...

Nope, both were bad in terms of value for money, never seen an official mod die soo quickly. Only one new weapon, rehashing weapon stats and giving them a new model isn't the same as a new gun to me (when they added the famas to CS, now that was a new gun, had 2 fire modes which none of the other rifles had). The vehicles are again rehashed.
The maps themselves are soo dire because there isn't any 3rd party competition (hint hint).
I never paid for Promod for Cod4 since it was a 3rd party free mod, so you can slag off Activision all you like, but IW were true to keeping up the PC crowd (CoD1+2+MW) till MW2.
Dice have been at this for while, messing around their Customers in 2142. So no, I doubt that there will be any patches or addons for BC2 now.

It's all about the Benjamins. They do less, and charge a premium price for it seems to work far too well for them.
Just say no. At least until they finish it, or is no immediate updates required too much to ask?
Don't.

You can preorder BF3 for £35 from pretty much every game retailer now, BC2 you could preorder for £25, the prices are def shifting up.
I think ill hold fire and wait on steam's price since i avoided paying £35 for BC2 on steam original, this time it seems it might meet it like for like so steam will inevitably win.

Sounds reasonable enough action to be considered for targetting.

It died? I haven't played it for a few days now but there still seems to be a lot of interest in it. I have said from the start that I have my doubts about how long 5 maps can hold interest but I am not bored of it yet. Out of the 5 maps there is only 1 that I think is really poorly designed, but you can look at it as being a real test in teamwork to break out
In most games the difference between some guns is marginal. You only have to look at black ops enfield/galil famase/aug/commando to see this. TBH the weapon variation in CS is some of the best I have seen in terms of how each gun handles.
The point I was making regarding the mods is that it is becoming a thing of the past - BF2 had plenty of mods for it (project reality etc) but they are all stopping doing it now. I might not have anything good to say about activision but I am not deliberately trying to slag them off - but comparison between the 2 biggest FPS franchises is not unreasonable...
Can't comment on BF2142 because I played the demo and that was more than enough for me and I stopped with BF2!

Nah, not tempting me at all yet. I may get it on Steam at some point, but, there is no rush what-so-ever.
May even wait for a tasty review before contemplating anything (hint, hint).

DICE has talked about mod tools for the game though it wont come till after the release, the main problem with any tools is that the engine is very complicated why it has been kept in house.

Dunno if this part of the Battlefield site was live when you posted this or not. But anyway, some tasty videos of both Battlefield 3 and BBC2 Viet-*expletive*-nam!
Clicky and probably you'll need to go through the silly age and region check thing. Address is http://www.battlefieldbadcompany2.com/videos just in case.

New bf3 trailer, looks like singleplayer campaign though, single player in a proper battlefield game? what are consoles driving us to
|
|
|
Yeah, it still looks sexy though. Looks like the proposed new Back to Karkland map, which should be (must be! has to be! please be!) multiplayer. Better be anyway. This video should've been visible from my link but I think I messed that up didn't I? Cheers for relinking FireFalcon.
Yes, damn EA. Why put a single player mode in when multiplayer will do? Just spend those wasted hours in developing a truly epic multiplayer game instead or, being cynical, speed all those post release patches up and get them to us sooner. I want to revisit the glorious days of um, Battlefield 1942 with the DC mod and um, have all those good memories of getting repeatedly slaughtered in base/raped by planes/spawn killed time and time again and all the other fun stuff revisited but better than Battlefield 2, which, good as it is, never had the soul BF1942 had.
Here's the official skinny on what to expect on the game:
http://www.ea.com/uk/battlefield3
Battlefield 3 leaps ahead of its time with the power of Frostbite 2, the next instalment of DICE's cutting-edge game engine. This state-of-the-art technology is the foundation on which Battlefield 3 is built, delivering enhanced visual quality, a grand sense of scale, massive destruction, dynamic audio and incredibly lifelike character animations. As bullets whiz by, walls crumble, and explosions throw you to the ground, the battlefield feels more alive and interactive than ever before. In Battlefield 3, players step into the role of the elite U.S. Marines where they will experience heart-pounding missions across diverse locations including Paris, Tehran and New York.
More detailed blurb on the site... Looks like we're going downtown, Manhattan style, then boys. And a quick visit to gay Paris and our good friends the Iranians, where it should at least be nice and sunny!

Thats if iran doesnt tear itself apart like libya/egypt/tunisia/bahrain/etc before we get there ;D
|
|

Guess we'd be playing Sim City in that case.
