Hi
I'm looking to setup QoS on my bt voyger 2110 to give my ps3 priority traffic, But i have never used QoS and dont really understand it, There are 2 types of QoS on my router Bridge QoS / IP QoS, I have set a static ip on my ps3, I'm guessing that ip QoS is the one to use?
Under ip QoS are the following
Traffic Class Name:
Traffic Conditions
Protocol:
Source IP Address: Subnet Mask:
Source Port (start-end): -
Destination IP Address: Subnet Mask:
Destination Port (start-end): -
Assign Priority for this Traffic Rule
Traffic Priority:
IP Precedence: The corresponding 'Precedence' value in the IP header of the upstream packets will be overwritten by selected value.
IP Type of Service: The corresponding 'TOS' value in the IP header of the upstream packets will be overwritten by selected value.

IP QoS is the right one yes.
Do you have to use protocol? Iis there an option for mac address instead (if so its even easier) then you can just say everything from this mac address has priority.
I would set IP Prec and TOS to 4

I've just upgraded to the latest firmware 3.62 and now the QoS options are different, It now has MAC.
Traffic Class Name:
Traffic Conditions
LAN Ports which traffic come from:
Ethernet Wireless
Source MAC Address: MAC Mask:
Destination MAC Address: MAC Mask:
Protocol:
Source IP Address: Subnet Mask:
Source Port (start-end): -
Destination IP Address: Subnet Mask:
Destination Port (start-end): -
Assign Priority for this Traffic Rule
Traffic Priority:
DiffServ Class (DSCP): The corresponding DSCP value in the IP header of the upstream packets will be overwritten by selected value.

Even better then, just choose the LAN port the PS3 is connected to or if its wireless use the source mac address of the PS3. Leave any destination blank and protocol if it will let you.
For the DSCP value use 46 (EF - Expedited Forwarding)

It doesn't have the option to choose which ethernet port i'm using.
LAN Ports which traffic come from:
Ethernet <-- Thats just a box that you can tick or untick.
Source MAC Address: MAC Mask: <-- do i put my ps3 MAC in this one or destination MAC Address
|
|
|
|
Ok yes just put your PS3 MAC address in this ----> Source MAC Address: MAC Mask:
|
|

|
Thank you.
If i wanted to give the low priority to my ps3 which DiffServ Class should i use?
|
|
|
|
Hmm that's a bit different, why would you want to do that?
|
|
|
|
I want to increase latency, I'm very highly effected by lag compensation in multiplayer on cod or bfbc2, To the extent there virtually unplayable, So i want to limit the bandwidth to increase the latency.

I don't think you are going to be able to do what you want really.
Setting QoS is about giving more priority to some traffic over others so say.. if you were on youtube watching something you could make it so the PS3 traffic gets priority and doesn't get swamped by the youtube video.
But you can't slow down the PS3 traffic to introduce more latency. Even if you gave it no priority at all it would still be unaffected.
If you use torrents (or something else that eats up your bandwidth) you could give that priority and your PS3 none at all that would affect it but I can't see you getting the balance right to be honest
I'd say its a problem with the game, not your set-up

I thought that might be the case, I guess my next option is maybe a router with traffic shaping, Been looking at a D-link DSL-2640 router that has a traffic shaping option.

Traffic shaping is still QoS so I don't think it will help you I'm afraid.
So you are saying your connection isn't laggy itself but when others join with a bad connection and lag you are affected by the compensator is that right?
|
|
|

Yes, I never get a lag free game, My ping is 20ms, 22mbps sync down / 1.3mbps up, I can switch fastpath on and get 24mbps and ping down to 10ms, Theres no problem with my line, When host in any cod game its bad, Far worse than when i'm not host.

I have exactly the same problem. Contrary to BT's adverts, FTTC doesn't necessarily give you a better gaming experience. Certainly not on the consoles anyway. Choosing your own server without matchmaking and not playing in parties would help. Sadly not an option on COD, Battlefield etc.
I have a 9ms ping. When not hosting, it isn't a great experience to be honest. But as restarts says, when hosting, 90% of the time it is unplayable.

Knowing how it works is completely different to understanding how it works.

8.45Mbps Upstream

Try mercenary team death match on cod if you haven't already. The lack of parties being allowed slightly improves the matchmaking, but on 10ms ping you are fighting a losing battle I think.
Are you on a fibre connection?

You will be able to pick what server you play with the new Battlefield game.as EA have confirmed there will be a server browser even on consoles.

Is your console the only device on the network, the homehub doesn't have QoS inbuilt

Spot on that, like I say I think its the game (bad coding) not your router or connection

Sorry if I mislead you! I am not on BT infinity but with Aquiss and the download speeds are amazing, 38/8Mbps. It's not the product that is the problem, but the game compensation code as you say. And superfast broadband makes that worse if anything.
Even interleaving control is apparenly still not an option yet on FTTC.

Yeah I saw that, but I wasn't sure if you were just choosing your game or choosing the server with the best connection suited to your own i.e. 60ms ping, 20ms ping etc.
I've never been a PC gamer so I can only go on what I've read. I know you used to run game servers on the PC mate. Am I barking up the wrong tree?

I know nothing about PS3 gaming and almost nothing about xbox - my daughter has one, but I am useless at FPS without a mouse.
To avoid the compensation when hosting can't you just arrange not to be connectable - strict nat IIRC xbox calls it.
If you really wanted to add latency you probably could if you routed the console through a Linux PC, but how possible/easy it would be would depend on the details your existing network setup.
