I use the Thomson 585v7 Router
Bad Company 2 needs uPnP to be disabled, otherwise I get disconnected every 10 minutes.
Modern Warfare 2 needs uPnP to be enabled though, otherwise my "NAT Type" is strict, and I get issues finding hosts (servers) etc...
Is there a work around to this? What can I do to be able to play both freely without having to change uPnP constantly
Regards

Hi. Have you tried forwarding your ports?
Have a look at portforward.com
|
|
|
|
No I havent, what are you suggesting, leave uPnP off and forward ports for MW2 to make the NAT Type open? If that works that would be great

Not sure why BC2 needs it disabled we are talking Xbox right? If so set it up like this:- http://www.unofficialguidetolive.co.uk/faqs/62-my-na...
Same router just rebadged

Try this.
BFBC2
and this
MW2
I am assuming these are both for xbox. I cant understand why you are required to disable upnp.
Are you running a wired or wireless setup? If its wireless try using a wired connection and see if that changes anything.
Good luck

No we are talking PC
Just done all the port forwarding and NAT Type is still strict
I tried rebooting the router and restarting my PC, and NAT Type is still strict
I believe it is all about the uPnP, one game needs it on and one game needs it off

I am Wired, and it was a known issue months ago with Bad Company 2.
A huge number of people playing the game on PC would get disconnected every 10-20 minutes, alot of those people had the Thomson 585v7 router (As that router seems to be the ISP's favourite choice to give away for free) and we all had uPnP enabled. Disabling uPnP solved the disconnect issue, so Ive had uPnP disabled all this time.
Now however, I am wanting to play abit of Modern Warfare 2, but that game requires uPnP for the whole hosting/peer2peer [censored].... So I have no idea what to do other than toggle uPnP on/off all the time depending what I want to play, which is annoying.
Not even months ago, I mean that was the solution to the issue like 1 year ago, within months of the games release date.

Turn UPnP off and put your console in a DMZ or portforwarding.
Basically UPnP is a method of automating port forwarding, it was designed to make it all simpler but i have nothing but issues with it, it never does what its meant to do.
By putting your console in a DMZ you are opening all ports to it, if you are port forwarding you only open what you select. If its a PS3 i'd advise DMZ cause theyre a mess of ports and such, if its a 360 you can do either, XBL only really uses 2-3ports.
Either way you need to assign your console a static IP address, you can do that from your consoles dashboard under network settings, once you've done that you access your routers configuration and either find the place to configure a DMZ, the option should be default dmz server or something similar, just stick the IP you gave your console into the default dmz box and apply.
I assume you are referring to a 360 since you are saying "strict/open NAT", http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwardi...

Sorry, Xbox in the head
Had a look at the EA forums regarding this. Strange that the upnp has to be disabled to stay connected to the game servers. I'm sure you have read these posts but just in case you haven't;

Yeah Ive read that, uPnP needs to be disabled for Bad Company 2
Still brings me to the brick wall because it needs to be enabled for Modern Warfare 2
Im not using a console FireFalcon and my Router doesnt let you use DMZ anyway

Well in that case you don't need UPnP you should be able to portforward the ports for both games to your PC. UPnP is one way of opening ports, port forwarding is another
Also bear in mind if you have a firewall on your PC the ports will need to be allowed through it
|
|
|
|
Righteo then
I guess the only thing to do is to enable uPnP and port forward the correct Bad Company 2 ports. Then hopefully both games will work
But jumping ahead to the future, what if I do that and I start getting disconnected from Bad Company 2 again due to uPnP being enabled?
Gonna do it now

Oh hold on, I just read on portforward for them to work my computer needs to be setup to use a static IP. Not sure if it is, so going to download the Free software that sets it up for me
|
|
|
|
No that makes no difference, my computers definately setup as a static IP now
Modern Warfare 2 ports etc.. its still strict, so I will try what I said above with the uPnP on and do the Bad Company 2 ports. I dont reckon it will work though

Hmm im confused, just enabled uPnP and forwarded all the correct ports. NAT Type was Open at first, but now its strict again.
Restarted PC & Router, tried again. Still strict. Closed MW2, checked router settings to make sure all the settings are the same...... that PC is still static IP and all the game applications are still forwarded to my PC etc you know and that uPnP is still enabled.... everything was right, so I launched MW2 again and its still strict grrrr
Duno whats goin on now, I guess this router is just pure [censored]
|
|
|
|
UPnP and portforwarding do the same thing I would turn off UPnP and just forward the ports for both games, but as you said you need a static ip address on the PC for this to work properly
|
|
|
|
nothing working i duno what else to do, might just have to face the facts that my router is [censored]
thank u though everyone for helping

I haven't seen firmware suggested anywhere so far, maybe that there is a firmware update that fixes these issues for that router model?
For what it's worth, it does sound like the router playing up as opposed to anything else.
Can you borrow another router from a friend to try another make/model?

Never had that issue with the 585v7, did you try tweaking the settings like changing the udp cone etc?
http://www.edmondscommerce.co.uk/misc/be-broadband-c...
Should help, and you can leave upnp on.

BFBC2 only disconnects from the first time you start a fresh game on a server. It will disconnect in about 10 mins or so. If you rejoin the server or go on a different one after that it will not disconnect again.
the next time you play the game the same thing will happen.
So a as long as you are ok with it disconnecting once the first time you play then you can leave upnp enabled, and still play BC2 without disconnecting as long as it has disconnected once already in your current session.

hi all ty
my isp folks have mentioned about the firmware and they said im using the latest one 8.2.7.7 but im wondering if im using an older build of the firmware and was thinking if might help if i reinstall the firmware? im still waiting for a reply from them about that
I tried doing some of the cone settings n stuff through telnet and it seemed to work but i had other problems and only my pc would work on the router, my ps3 and phone would connect to the router but internet connection wouldnt work not sure why this was happening, the settings i used were:
http://www.beusergroup.co.uk/technotes/index.php?tit...
I did all that and after I restarted the router, only my PC was receiving internet from the router. PS3 and Mobile wasnt
Yeah I suppose thinking about it while not playing first 20min dc aint that bad, it is annoying though as usually annoys me that much I exit the game Would be nice to fix it if poss, even if meaning buying a new router but rather this one work

Me and my friend can't reproduce your issue with the router, before and after the tweaks made. Ask for a new box? I used to hate the box for falling over every couple of hours because of the wireless, but the newer firmwares have solved that issue. I've only just put it away again because I fixed my faulty cap in my old dg834gt and can once again mess with the snr to get higher syncs.

This fixed it!
Done a hard reset on the router and then done these changes in that step by step guide and it works now. uPnP enabled and I dont get disconnected in BFBC2 and MW2 works fine
Thank you!
