PS Vita

[link to this post]

Made me mind up, gotta have one!

I've never bought a handheld before and always said that I would if someone came up with dual sticks, so I don't have an excuse anymore. Not going to pre order one though. Going to wait and see what bundles they come up with. Game wise I think it will have to be Uncharted though. Looks great and apparently the campaign is slightly longer than UC3.

Happy days when the whiff is watching Eastenders from now on. grin

Best deals are on Shopto mate.wink

I have to admit it looks a awesome bit of kit but every portable console i have owned in the past has been basically wasted on me.

From the original Gameboy and the addictive tetris at the time then the sega gamegear and all the versions of the playstation portable and all the new Nintendo hand held have all been a waste of my time money and effort.

Sadly i think for me its a age thing with the need to wear glasses at certain times makes the portable gaming more of a chore than a pleasure.

I bought the new Nintendo 3ds and within weeks with its 3d gimmick feature and timy screen i had traded it.

I like playing the occasional game on my Ipad and i know the new vita has a decent size screen but im just not convinced this is for me anymore,20 years ago without a doubt i would have been queuing at the shop front on release day.

Im having to really see amazing games and believable hype from people like yourself for me to buy into this product having said i would never buy a handheld again.

Games like Uncharted have little to no appeal on such a small gaming device but really decent puzzles it what i adore on these machines and its what i generally buy them for in the first place.

I have seen all the videos and have been watching a lot of technical stuff concerning the Vita and it does look like a very powerful thing of beauty but i really have to justify the massive price for a portable that the Vita is and the fact its actually more than both a fully loaded Xbox and Playstation 3.

Then we can take into consideration that companies like Nintendo ,Apple, and Sony will release the next generation within 6 months and add a additional feature than should have been on it in the first place.

Technology is a thing i live extremely and I'm a gadget freak but sadly its virtually impossible to keep up,even when myself and my girlfriend by the latest super duper Televisions only months later they are last generation.

Its like the latest television technology and the way they are trying to promote the 3D effects, not until they release 3D televisions without the need for 3D glasses at a decent price will i have the slightest interest.

I saw UC on it and that's probably what sold me. I will probably use it for remote play of upcoming games more than buying specific Vita games.

But I think third person games will be great on that OLED screen.

Yeah mate nothing excites me more than a Playstation Vita and a copy of Battlefield 3 tongue

If this was the only means of gaming then i would retire completely and get a new interest for sure.

I dont have the passion as much as i used to and there are times in the last year when i just struggle to enjoy games like in the past and much prefer to watch a dvd and can go a week without even touching a console.

Obviously this happens when we have a games drought and there is nothing of interest, however even games that get me a little excited fall by the wayside more often than not.

Come to think about it there is not one game on the horizon that i know of at present that has me really excited, there are many that i look forward to like Mass Effect 3 [not my game really] Max Payne and GTA5 and a fair few others also.

Actually the closer to release date the more I'm tempted because its a nice shiny new gadget and the more videos i watch the more impressed i feel.

My basic problem is the fact that i know in my heart of hearts that i do not really enjoy playing games on mobile devices like Iphone, ,ipad psp ds ect ect.

So based on that observation its only the real gamer in me that wants anything and everything to do with a games, not only that i would even more than likely go for the wifi /3g model even though i would not contemplate paying a monthy service for the 3g capabilities.

Sort of a snobbish attitude just like the fact i would never buy a bog standard console that has a 4 gig flash drive like the xbox arcade or a lower spec playstation 3 at the time.

Certainly not interested in the multiplayer of the vita but i do like a classic puzzle game like LUMINES and a few other slower paced rts type games.

Dont worry in the next few days i will make my mind up once and for all and personally i hope i opt out but that is going to be extremly difficult when a new gaming device is launched and i have not got one......wink

Dont laugh mate because i have done some silly things in my life and constantly loose out where money is concerned and that possibility could in your wildest dreams come true.tongue but not at £30....What about postage and i might consider it ?wink

Joking apart i expect you to have one on release day and not wait for the sale of my Vita on here ?

Got to be honest when you buy a basic wifi model then a 16 gig card and then a game to go with it your at £300 for a portable gaming device.

Certainly not exactly a snip is it costing both more than a high end Playstation and xbox 360 fully loaded.

Then a week wednesday on launch day we will again be tempted to buy even more of the vita store online.

Personally a Playstation 4 or xbox 720 would have been a far better option and i would not be having a debate with myself as it would have been a certainty that i got the console update and not just the one i would have bought both if released at the same time no question about it.

Thirty quid and I'll chuck in my copy of BF3. You'll have to buy the online pass yourself though. wink

To be honest I won't be buying it on release. Maybe toward the start of the summer if cash flow allows it, but I definitely will get one this year. Trouble is I'm not sure what game to get. I really want UC Golden Abyss, but once you've played through it once that will probably be it. And I won't buy the volume of games that I would on a console, so something like FIFA may be better for pick up and play or travelling. Or even COD zombies. Will have to wait and see what puzzlers come out I guess.

Dungeon Hunter, is that the same as the one that has been out on the iPhone / iPad for a year? If so it's a really good game I liked it a lot. I am not sold on the Vita to be honest, the iPad seems to have brilliant graphics and games like Fifa, Sim City, Final Fantasy etc. all play brilliantly on it and only cost about £3 - £5 a game whereas I assume the Vita the games will be £20 ish like DS games? Seems like £269 for a shiny paper weight with a nice LED screen tongue

Unless you travel for work or play a lot of handhelds or are a young person (under 16) I can't really see this appealing to many more.

"At the end of the day its a new gaming device"

Just because it is a new gaming device is not reason to buy it. You're paying £269 for what looks like 1 good game and 2 terrible games. Don't get me wrong it's your money spend it how you wish but I just think there is no need to buy every single gadget that comes out, you're always going to be disappointed. For all the games that come out what 1 in 10 is probably worth buying? On an Xbox or PS3. With a handheld console you can probably double or triple that!

I dont buy every gadget Jaxx come on get real matey, and when i do they normally get traded and i lose a few quid in the process.

I dont drink and prefer to spend what money i have on gaming devices only im not totally blown away buy small screens like the Nintendo ds.

Actually come to think of it you may be right as i do or have had in the past most things to do with gaming that have been released.

And when you say 2 [censored] games then i doubt you know what your talking about, for starters Lumines is one of the best puzzle games ever to grace any system, rayman got incredible reviews on all the consoles and its a lovely platform game because i have played it,and dungeon hunter is suppose to be another decent game even promoted by yourself.

So im not sure where the 2 [censored] games come from but even if 2 of them were not so good its still the best deal.

The games are expensive, agreed. But you are not comparing apples with apples. I love browsing on an iPad whilst watching the telly. But I wouldn't bother gaming on it when there is a PS3 in the same room. But with a PS Vita I get to stream games and interact with the PS3 without waiting for the kids to go to bed. Plus I get to use it when travelling in the car or when sitting at the mother in laws listening to mind numbing nonsense.

I don't like touch screens for the main controls, hence finally the long requested addition of the analogue sticks. The other front and rear touch screen/pad bring something new without forcing them on you as the main control. Pairing a controller wih an iPad to achieve the same makes it unportable IMO.

All in all, if I had the finances available it would have to be a day one purchase for me. smile

Think of it as a childrens charitable donation. It's either a Vita, or the kids school trainers. Do they still let them play football in their plimsoles?

Sounds good if your into that sort of thing but seriously Vita players are going to struggle with such a small screen arnt they.

The only reason you would want to play Cod on it online would be if you were away from your main console, and i am not convinced the 3G is the way to go as a Broadband connection can prove troublesome at the times.

You can stroke it, shake it, and fiddle with um, dual knobs/control sticks whilst other people watch on or join in. I guess gaming is getting interesting! wink

Spook you crack me up winkand the vita i ordered comes with a memory card 4 gig which i will more than likely change in the future if i get on with the device.

Im sure i read that you needed a card for game saves and downloadable content,

Just read this..............

Sony's PlayStation Vita has a high level of graphical prowess, a stellar list of third-party development partners, and has a lovely, large enhanced resolution screen. There is plenty to love about this new handheld from Sony so far but, in a recent FAQ posting by Sony, it may have one minor flaw that will cause some to grimace in disappointment.

Sony has revealed that the PS Vita will not have internal memory and since the Vita has a storage media slot, users can purchase a memory card of their own accord in relation to their needs and planned space usage.

Q: Does PS Vita have internal memory?
A: PS Vita is equipped with the storage media slot so that users can choose what memory capacity they want to utilize depending on their use.

So, if you plan to purchase PSP games or Vita games off PlayStation Network, you'll need a hefty sized card to hold a robust roster of digital titles. This memory unit will only be required for digital games as the Vita game format will be able to save data directly to the flash card itself, much like the 3DS.

As to what kind of format this will be, Sony isn't ready to reveal it.es.

Q: What type of storage media will PS Vita support?
A: This will be announced at a later date.

The bloke said some games will save saves to the game card. He had 6 full games saved onto the 16gb memory card, so no need to carry the game cards.

So it's made of plastic, vibrates and is battery powered. And you can play with it in the bedroom? And they make you put a strap on? blush

You can stroke it, shake it, and fiddle with um, dual knobs/control sticks whilst other people watch on or join in. I guess gaming is getting interesting! wink

So much detail SPOOK..........some previous experience perhaps? tongue grin

IMO rightly or wrongly, money on handheld games is best spent on something ultimately re-playable. FPS and Action games look great on the Vita, but will I get bored after one play through? There will be hundreds of minis and digital games obviously. But I'm talking about the big titles.

Hence my thinking for a list of games I would consider, might be (bare these in mind T2D tongue):

ModNation Racers (really hoping for this one!)
LBP
Rayman
FIFA
Formula 1

Any other suggestions, perhaps for top a notch platformer?

ModNation Racers and F1 2011 are both being released

Wipeout has never interested me, don't know what it is about it but I don't like it.

Uncharted would be good one to have, but like you say once played they are no good.

Haha, I wish! Ahem. grin

It's a shame Sony have elected to develop their own proprietary media card for saving data. It's understandable they'd want to do this for distributing games, having ditched the UMD but to have no onboard storage for game data and patches is just stupid in my view. I fully expect to see an updated version a year or 2 from now with gigabytes of internal storage.

'Bare' in mind? Are you still thinking about what I think you're thinking about? wink I think you meant bear in mind, as in consider rather than nekkid. Mind you, T2D's mind probably is a bit bare so I guess you was right the first time! laugh tongue

Just back from my local Game, been playing with one for a while. I've gone for the Vita (WiFi only) with an 8GB card plus Uncharted and also ordered Dungeon Hunter plus a protective case.

Played 'Little Deviants' instore, fairly addictive that! (I knew I should have taken my reading glasses frown)

Hmmm. Bear you say?

Yeah, bit of a downer on the memory card thing, but it's no more than I've come to expect really. I think an 8 GB will be enough for me luckily and that's not a bad package.

What do you think of the build quality and game quality?

Actually, I'm now starting to wonder whether or not to buy a game or just download it. That way I only need to carry one card and it's easily downloaded again if I lose it?

I know how annoying the ankle weights get when they can't find their DS Lite games laying around the house.

The build quality seems to be ok on the whole, the demo model had a small dent in the metal trim band around the side but they have had it a while and I guess quite a few people have handled it.

One thing that does look to be a bit flimsy are the 'doors' on the edges that cover the memory and game card slots (in common with several devices e.g. cameras on sale these days). I wonder how long it will be before the 'hinge' gives way. (though I have to say the similar 'door' on my camera is still ok after more than a year).

The 'Little Deviants' game is addictive and is played by using the touch surface on the rear of the Vita. You move the 'ground' under your player. The graphics are clear and bright thanks to the OLED screen. Obviously the resolution is not as high as a computer screen or tv, even without my reading specs I could see well enough to play the game, just could not read the text, either on screen or on the Vita itself.

I am looking forward to trying Dungeon Hunter and Uncharted next Wednesday evening and I can see that I may get Little Deviants too.

It is worth having a look at but leave your wallet at home smile.

Yeah, it's weird isn't it? I always get bear and bare confused. Is there also a bair? Or what?

Yes, could've been worse but why Sony couldn't have added SD Card support? Even MicroSD card just for media as well as their new Vita Media thing would've been good.

I like the idea of owning a Vita myself but doubt I would do it justice, plus the game are all around £30 or so and I don't think I'd buy too many. Great hardware and control interface I feel. So much better than that Android/PS phone thing but ultimately, I still feel phone gaming on the move is the better option as mobile gaming seems to be more about time wasting (casual puzzlers etc) rather than serious gameplay but then, what do I know? I suppose if you do a lot of commuting (and don't have other to do) it makes a lot of sense though!

The largest card currently available in the UK is 16GB and it is around the £40 mark, I don't know how much space the games take up though. Having all the games on one card would certainly be useful. It would save having to keep swapping cards when you want to change the game.

The memory/game cards are not hot-swappable either, so you need to turn off the Vita to swap cards.
