Sorry. I have actually spent a couple of hours every night sorting stuff out from my old pc!

The games I've thrown at it so far average 80-90 frames per second on Ultra. The only issue I had at the beginning was some screen tearing here and there, as I'm using a TV, not a monitor.

I've now set the refresh rate at 59Hz and turned V-sync on and it runs at exactly
60 fps continually. That's at Custom Ultra with absolutely everything on and maxed. Thanks to Kila for that tip. ;o)

For the racing games I play, the R9 380 is running them buttery smooth with cracking visuals. No driver issues, no micro stutter, no tearing unless you let the frame rate run free (pointless on a TV). It is extremely quiet considering it is in such a tiny case. It runs really cool too, not going above 63°C in the heat yesterday which I was quite frankly amazed at. I am quite confident that this card will run virtually anything at 1080p in Ultra and still manage close to 60fps. I was expecting a reference type card, but it actually arrived with a Sapphire Nitro 380 4GB with twin cooling fans. Very pleased with that. smile

So contrary to recent claims on the forum, this "re-branded" AMD graphics card is not suffering from disastrous drivers, extreme temperatures, hair dryer fan volumes and is absolutely, categorically, une-f***ing-quivocally NOT running like a dog.

Thank god I stuck to the old fashioned method of researching things for myself.

I don't own Project Cars yet. And we moved on from 4k ages ago. I can't fit anything bigger into the case because of power supply restrictions, remember?

You dish out such fanboy criticism of another manufacturer, then when Kila has repeated crashing issues on his new card, you admit to suffering the same issue. And his cure was nothing to do with your advice either. The truth is they are as good and bad as each other from title to title.

The fact is that you have consistently overstated "problems" with my choice of card, yet it has not crashed/struggled at all. If you want to call me a liar, please do it openly.

These guys think you're wrong too.

Not taking sides here either but let's not forget that nelly was trying to do this build on a sensible budget, yeah given he's not gonna hit 4k with his card but neither am I with my 970 which cost £70-80 more!!

of course, just reminding him its not a good idea to slam those who are only trying to help.

For reference if I max out project cars (including SMAA which isnt cheap) I do get frame rate averages below 60 at 1050p in some races. It happens, isnt the end of the world. But not much has to be turned down to fix it, I drop SMAA one level and shadows one level and is fine.

Shame we had these spats as we could probably have good discussion over project cars as like nelly I love the game, probably the best driving game I have played within past 10 years.

Precisely, but there is a law of diminishing returns.

As soon as I can afford a three screen racing rig I will upgrade, but then I will not be constrained by case size and can have any card I want to run it.

But believe me, the "running like a dog" type statements are utter nonsense. You might have 600 quid to spend on a graphics card, but it doesn't give you much more other than frame rate. Like me, you're used to running at 30fps on console. The R9 380 (or a GTX 960 if you prefer NVIDIA) gives the consoles a good old fashioned kicking. At 30fps it annihilates them completely.

Not being the latest and greatest, doesn't make them bad cards. Advising people that AMD are bad cards is dishonest fanboi. You're fine because you're all 4k 'ed up, but anybody intending to use it on a 1080p TV (I suspect the majority of those connecting to a TV) would be wasting their money on frame rates that wIll actually damage the experience, rather than enhance it.

Where Kila's card will really whoop the 380 is on a 1440p monitor.

Lol! Not at all mate. The only worry is that you won't need anything like 12 GB of VRAM currently and by the time you do, will they still be top end? This is the problem right now. With everything heading down the DX12 route, we should be seeing better results for less. Who knows what next years incarnations of the HBM memory design might bring in terms of performance in a smaller form factor? Nvidia will be launching their take on it in 2016, so you might do better to wait for those.

Those bad boys wouldn't be best placed in a micro ITX case anyway lol! I still love the Trinity (X wing) style case, but the missus was having quite literally none of it. Oh well, perhaps when I get my man cave! crazy

£2000 on twin cards......Where does the expense end ?

Have you seen the top end Gaming PC from Scan, think its around £15,000 Big Ones ..........Now thats what i call a dedicated Gamer who is hell bent on getting the absolute maximum from that sort of crazy investment.

Personally myself,i think around £3.000 would be maximum if not less ?

£1,500 to £2,000 is about the maximum, beyond that the £/return on performance drops off massively, will also get peripherals and monitors out of that build.

With graphics cards its all about the monitor size and resolution you play at, as 1080p you do not need to spend over £300.

Out of interest, I've been fiddling with Virtual Super Resolution and it looks amazing at 4k on the ultra preset. shocked

Unfortunately, although it reaches as high as 45 FPS, at times it drops down to very low twenties which makes it too choppy really. At custom ultra with everything on full, it averages only 23 with drops to 17 which gets really stuttery at times and is no good on the eyes at all!

It does manage 35 consistently at 1440p at ultra which looks really, really nice too, but after running all week at 1080/60, it feels slightly sluggish. Going to try 4k with medium to high settings tonight and see if I can get a locked frame rate. smile

VSR does cause a slight lag with the wheel input apparently, but I can't say it's noticeable in Dirt Rally, particularly as the steering is so exaggerated whilst sliding about. It might be more noticeable in Project Cars for example, but overall a good little feature for us TV gamers. smile

Yeah like I said last night, with the higher resolutions you should be able to turn down or even off some of the eye candy as the resolution should more than make up for it!!

Whist reading about Nvidia's DSR I've also discovered MFAA which apparently which gives MSAA quality but at only half the performance cost smile Basically says by having MFAA turned on and then selecting MSAA x2 in game you get the equivalent of MSAA x4 and so on and so on laugh

I'll be giving it a go later!!

Which brings me to the conclusion that with MFAA enabled and a lower MSAA setting I should be able to up the resolution more without such a performance hit smile

Don't worry Timey you don't have all these settings to worry about on the consoles wink

the 1420 is the gpu clock which is the boost 2.0 and is automated. But every card has different limits due to the silicon lottery. My asic quality is 71%. I havent done a manual increase to the gpu clock, just the memory clock.

I have used DSR on a couple of games to play around with it but not on project cars.

DSR is just it renders at a higher resolution and then downscales.

DSR will be both memory heavy and gpu heavy as pixel count kills performance. In my view not a good idea on project cars.

also bear in mind the 970 FTW has a factory overclock also.

and yeah DSR is best for older games, where the gpu has lots of idle time.
