Sound card

[link to this post]

Onboard sound seems to have stopped on my PC although I am now running a pair of speakers that are plugged into the red socket on the back of the case

Motherboard is a MSI Z97 Gaming 5
https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/Z97-GAMING-5/Specifi...

I tested the surround sound system that was plugged in by plugging my walkman into it and it seems fine

Can anyone recommend a good cheap sound card please?

Thanks Swanster smile

You sure you're not in the wrong port? Is it actually red or is it pink? If it is pink then that is your mic port. You should be in the green port I believe.

Definitely red. There are none of the normal colours on the back. The speakers were working fine then suddenly decided not to bother.
I was thinking that a cheap sound card might be the easiest option and maybe a better sound than the onboard card ?

I think unless you have specific requirements then sound cards are pretty similar these days. Even the old sound master Creative have cards around £20 now that if you aren't looking for full surround sound should be perfectly capable (probably at least as good as onboard sound).

This has full surround sound even for £25 (probably available cheaper elsewhere).

As an alternative question did you check if you had any windows updates around the time the sound stopped working? It's possible that a windows update might have caused issues with the sound card.

Thanks for the suggestion. The speakers are Creative Inspire 5.1 5300 so that card or one similar would be great

I always like creative cards but it is years since I bought a discrete sound card - but cards can be pretty cheap these days - there are even USB options if you didn't want something internal but I suspect you are quite happy with opening the case and chucking a card in wink

More importantly, whats the cure for an arrow to the knee? Well both knees actually. Its currently severely limiting my motorbikeability. frown

I too suffer the arrow to the knee when riding. The trick is not to move the bike about while you're sat on it, if that doesn't help buy a lower bike smile

I presume you tried the normal thing like reinstall the drivers and that sort of thing?

i have a Asus xonar DX and it is a amazing card, they do a cheaper version which a mate used and that was good as well,

have a look at this, not cheap cheap, but a flipping good card

It's onboard sound so I didn't think it had drivers?

I only really need the card to play music https://radioparadise.com/player
Got fed up with playing games on my pc as I have to go through uplay boll0cks

That Asus card looks nice. I'll see what deals there are on friday

Onboard has drivers - everything has some sort of drivers, it may be they use MS default drivers or specific drivers but it will be using some. The sound chip will be from a specific manufacturer and they may have drivers on their website that you could try. Look up your motherboard and see what sound chip it uses and go from there.

All hardware have drivers, as been said by ian72, they may have Ms drivers, but they still need drivers.
The sound chip on your board is a Realtek ALC1150, most boards have realtek in , so you need the High definition drivers

realtek own site have some here, i never realised that they have not been updated since 2017, but I suppose they do not need to be, MSI have some here.

But I think they are the same anyway as they are the same date.

i love my little Asus card, they don't make it anymore sadly. another mate of mine is going to buy the higher end product for music production

That works ok
