Ping on all copper ADSL connection when gaming?

[link to this post]

Hi ,

So I am going to move into a place with an internet connection that doesn't seem to be the best... (And no fibre is unfortunately not an option right now frown )

So it is an ADSL connection provided by BT in the UK.

As far as I can gather from various websites I will live 3-4 km from the nearest BT exchange. The connection is an ADSL all copper wire, so copper from my house to the street cabinet and then copper to the BT exchange also. BT tells me I will have a speed of 2-5 Mbps.

So for download it will be quite slow. And might get a 4G connection for YouTube, streaming and whatnot. But it might be good enough for certain games like CSGO if I only have one wired device on this connection. So does anyone have experience with playing CSGO with a connection like this? And how is the latency/ping and the performance in general?

Your latency will depend on many factors. It will depend on what configuration DLM sets for your line as if it turns on interleaving for stability (which it may at that distance) then ping will be higher. It also depends on where you are in the country and what route your ISP sends the traffic - for example if you are in Scotland you would have a much higher ping to routes that go through London than someone who is inside the M25. It has been quite a while since I was on ADSL but in general the good thing is that pings are usually stable as long as the ISP isn't massively over subscribed.

Thanks for the input!

I am not too far away from London (100 kms approximately).

Btw would it make sense to ask the provider to turn off interleaving as it can give a better peformance for gaming? Or would that be ill advised?

I intend to use this connection mainly for gaming.

Some providers on ADSL used to (and possibly still do) offer "gaming profiles" that would optimise the settings for low latency. I am afraid I am not that up to date on the different ISP options for ADSL these days as it is a dying technology and so what ISPs used to offer may no longer be available. Hopefully someone with more current information on ADSL will come along with options for you.

Adsl/ copper/ Cable/ 4g are more or less the same for gaming I would try 5G or 4g out of those. Don’t go with virgin Cable it’s the worst as the translation from radio frequency to fibre takes way too long. You will notice a slight difference on 4g 5G although some providers are different on SIM cards in terms of reaction in games.
