I'm now up to about 17 hours game time.
It's an enjoyable game and I'm by no means a terrible player. My K/D ratio is just above 1 and I tend to prefer Engineer class so I also consider myself to be a "contributing player" helping out with repairs and the like.
I'm definitely finding myself favouring a specific map type. Close quarters maps like Seine Crossing, Grand Bazaar and Tehran Highway are my favourites. They have lots of streets, buildings and windows. It's up close and personal and you need some forward thinking and tactics with your squad/team to progress very far or achieve your objectives.
The bigger/open maps like Firestorm, Caspian Border and Canals are very irritating. I essentially avoid them. It's just full of the aforementioned god like helicopter/jet pilots and the German kids with no life who has now attained Rank 50 with his EPIC SNIPER rifle which now has a 12x scope so he can see your nostril hair from several miles distance.
There are already hackers getting in on the act. Lots are being detected by Punkbuster (it helpfully informs everyone when it bans someone from the server you're on) but anyone who has played FPS games online will know that for every detected hacker there is likely to be another one who hasn't had his cheats caught yet. I've already had my fair share of 180 degree insto headshots from the sniper who is still gliding in on his parachute.
On the close quarters maps I mentioned there is a definite advantage to squad play. My mates will join up on a ventrilo server so we can talk amongst ourselves. Quite often this can be used to good effect with vehicles with some people driving, others repairing and spotting. If you're on your own the communication is harder. Very few people seem to use the limited in-game radio commands and even fewer use text chat from what I've seen. As a result, if you're on a team on your own you'll find it's basically a free for all with campers, idiots driving away in empty vehicles and general lack of tactics or support which weakens the game a lot.
Also the M249 is possibly the most overpowered gun in the game. The Battlelog itself lists it as a Medium range weapon but i've seen plenty of people using it like a fully automatic sniper rifle and hitting people at very long range with high accuracy. I'd imagine it will be balanced soon as plenty of other people seem to have similar thoughts.
Overall I'd probably rate the game as somewhere around 7/10. I don't regret the £40 spent on it. I'll likely continue to play it for many months unless MW3 is spectacularly epic or the game gets over run by hackers like BF2 did. I find it enjoyable on the whole and I feel it's been executed pretty well from a technical point of view. As mentioned the game modes offer variety. The maps have different scales and character with some small, some large, some open country, some city-scape. Some day, some night. There are probably millions of gun/accessory/kit combinations. The vehicles add an extra layer over Modern Warfare games. All that said I just always have these niggling thoughts in the back of my head that the flaws I've mentioned in my other posts just take the shine off it and sometimes lead to an infuriating session.
I have high hopes for MW3. Having watched many videos about it, including those from the developers, I can see that they're at least trying to address many of the problems I had with MW2. And trust me, despite MW2 receiving a solid 2 years of game play and many hundreds of hours of my time, I had plenty of issues with it. I believe the way they're addressing the "killstreaks" into various types of "point streaks" will add a very subtle but important element of strategy missing from the previous titles. The return of servers for the PC is welcome. Ditching stuff like commando, nukes and that sort of thing will be good for the game. If they pull off the fixes and changes that have been talked about then it'll easily replace BF3 for me.
