Having been to Rome, I totally agree about Italians and driving. Over there, red stop lights are advisory and pedestrians cross at their peril. Also, loads of scooters, like you say. I heard some pretty horrific stories about some of the unfortunate helmet-less vespa riders hitting the kerb head first and splattering their brains all over the pavement. Not a pretty sight. Although I'd love to ride a scooter without the encumberance of a skid lid, it kinda put me off!

Crombie was a black 3 quarter length coat from the seventies in which most people that wore them had a red hanky sticking out of the top pocket [kind of pointed]

Yeah and like you say .........Zebra Crossing for example dont seem to have the same meaning as over here,you can wait at one for ages as nobody stops and even when your on them they go whizzing past.

Police also are so laid back its unreal,you see them get out of cars enter cafe and come out with fags in there mouth,may be the laid back attitude is better as i never saw a single bit of trouble over there in such a crowded place.

Nice clothes are good, yes. Personally I tend to sacrifice other things (like good food and everything else) for gadgets. I was actually going to try and change my priorities for this year and smarten myself up a little bit but to do that, you gotta buy clothes. And I hate shopping for clothes! With a passion.

I wonder when clothes retailers will get round to using tech (like web cams and 3D modelling) to size people up properly in the comfort and privacy of their own homes and that way, people like me could just order stuff knowing the size would be all right and job done? I guess you'd need something like the kinect technology but that is becoming far more widespread now isn't it? They'll all be building it into our TVs for sure. Apple will get their first prolly.

Anyhoo, I digress. Italian police, eh? Sound like a right bunch of wasters don't they? Good on 'em. I wish we Brits were a lot less stuffy about things and more easy going when it comes to politeness and etiquette and so on. I want to drive my (metaphorical & totally imaginary) car the wrong way up a one way street and shove old grannies out of my way in the post office queue! Right on! Who needs rules?

Sadly the new romantic era only lasted about 18 months and i can see myself now with Red Pixie boots,big pleated Cossack looking trousers that were like drain pipes at the bottom tucked into my boots but massive at the top,pirate type shirt with loads of pleats in it,sash around the trousers ........Those were the days matey

I'd have to try and smarten my appearance up a bit as they had a habit of looking down at me and disapproving of my general appearance the last time I was there. Wearing some smart gear might help gain some respect but not much I reckon. Being (poor) English abroad means you're in between dog status and that of a tramp in my experience but that could just be me... I do look a bit of a trampy dog I suppose.
