they are both overpriced, the ps3 of course was also overpriced at launch. Generally buying a console at launch is a bad idea financially, its the most likely times bugs will exist, its the most expensive time to buy one and it will have a limited games library. There is also no guaruantuee it will be a success look at the wii-u. I got my 360 3-4 years after launch, is a falcon, hasnt died on me. So I also havent had to repurchase one.
Financially comparing a pc to a console and value for money, pc's are a winner, most console gamers who dont have pc's have a misty view of pc costs. eg. buying a hdd for a pc isnt super inflated like it is for a xbox. Components can be upgraded over time instead of waiting for a next gen console at a inflated price which then doesnt also have BC so means ditching your old games or having 2 consoles lieing around. The only reason I own consoles is nothing to do with hardware but to do with exclusive games, (new) jrpg's are pretty much none existant on the pc, if all the games I wanted existed for the pc I wouldnt own a console pure and simple. Plus add the fact multiplayer gaming, netflix, heck even web browsing doesnt command an extra monthly sub on a pc.
Of course the pc is great for old jrpg's I can play old pc versions and old console versions (via an emulator). Believe it or not ps2 games run better on my pc than my ps3 (with its native BC).
I own a pc for work and general internet use, the amount I have spent on the parts of it that enhance games is easily under £349. Also all the talk next gen consoles cant even handle 1080p, the launch games having to use lower resolutions and be upscaled, the hardware inside those things isnt that good. PC's have been able to handle 1080p for half a decade.
