yeah this is how these paid services are working.

you enter their ip address.

for netflix etc. they give an ip that points to their own tunnels. so the connection to netflix isnt direct.

It seems tho both the wii-u and ps3 netflix apps ignore the proxy server setting So if I want to do this without paying a 3rd party it will be complex.

Its still easy on the pc I can one click change proxy server but the consoles with closed source apps that deliberatly ignore system proxy settings much more diffilcult.

Bear in mind I used my own personal dns server (hosted in america) not a shared service. The same dns server is used when I access via the proxy as its on the same server.

well the way I will do this if I can be bothered is probably via vpn on the router, although this looks a bit of a pain to setup as well so I havent done it yet.

May well try doing that at some point, I have a Asus RT-N56U router which has loads of settings you can fiddle with so should be possible.

confirm works fine on wii-u also.

interestingly it seems only the auth server needs an american ip, I can confirm (given I own my VPN server) that the actual streaming traffic is still direct not via the VPN. Indeed once logged into netflix, I can disable the VPN and still stream american only shows as long as I dont logout.

I reccomend the merlin version of asuswrt, its added the openvpn client functions. I setup openvpn on one of my american servers abd set it to only push out routes for specific netblock's (which are supposedbly all netflix). So even if I left the vpn on 24/7 traffic not to those netblocks wont use the vpn. (for performance as using VPN for everything will slow things down, add latency etc.). But the vpn on the asuswrt merlin firmware is very easy to toggle on/off on demand so I will only turn it on when required.

If you try something similiar yourself I can share my openvpn client/server configs with you to assist, let me know.
