I got it for 3 wii exclusive games initially. one of them is made by the same dev who made lost oddysey which is probably the best jrpg in previous generation.
I dont know what the hell is going on with the wii-u, commercially its a complete failure, but I feel this is about much more than the hardware.
Now days deals are made all the time, cash changes hands for exclusives etc. and I get the impression sony has their own developers in their pockets, microsoft has their's also, nintendo has noone just their own 1st party releases, they seem to think they dont need to pay for games to be developed on their system. Zelda wind waker isnt really a wii-u game, its a enhanced port for the wii-u so the wii-u after all this time is yet to have a native zelda game. The gamepad has the shortest battery life I have ever seen for a gamepad and if you seen the news article I posted it looks like they originally had a bigger battery but then reduced it to cut costs. If I compare it to say my vita, which isnt just a screen it also has a gpu/cpu etc. the vita has a battery that lasts about 10x as long and it charges faster as well. The gamepad on my wii-u has a sticky button, I usually only ever see sticky buttons on cheap 3rd party controllers or really old 1st party ones, my brand new wii-u controller has the problem. Plus the huge brick required to charge it urrrgh. Really bad design choices. The wii-u is obviously weak for this generation and in particular its cpu is very weak, but at the time it was the most powerful console when released yet it didnt get any support then, which is why I think its not all down to the hardware, unless developers knew at that time the future specs of ps4 and xbox1.
All I can do is compare it to other consoles I have and this is what I see.
The club nintendo website is still not complete about 2 years or so after the product is launched, in addition I registered my console and its yet to show on the site, when I registered my ps3 on psn it was instant. I contacted nintendo reps and have yet to have a reply.
The nintendo tvii feature which is used for iptv services, is yet to launch in europe, nintendo have a website they made in feb 2013 stating its coming soon, that same page is still there now in may 2014. They kept the app on the wii-u just it doesnt do anything.
No iplayer/itvplayer yet the ps4 already has these.
Nintendo's famous virtual console which I have seen way too much hype for has a massive 8 snes games on the wii eshop, seems all but abandoned.
The wii-u and even wii seems to have barely any budget games. I frequently brought games for both ps3 and xbox360 for £15-20 6 months or so after release, a 4 year old wii game costs £60, 2 year old wii-u game £40 etc.
I dont fault them making mario games, it is a good franchise and mario u is brilliant, mario 3d is brilliant. mario kart clearly a good franchise, as many competitors clone it. But its too few games, more are needed. Yes quite possibility with more different types of games, but adult themed games I think simply arent in nintendo's dna. The wii-u is too expensive for a 8 year old. Not powerful enough for adult themed gamers. and for whatever reason (is probably related to hw spec but probably also other reasons) 3rd parties wont touch it. The touchpad that comes with it I think also will confuse the sort of gamers who got attracted to the wii.
Also how marketing have we seen from nintendo? seems nothing compared to sony and microsoft.
