microsoft did a mini nintendo.
They were arrogant enough to assume they could bundle a kinect forcefully, as well as employ over the top anti consumer policies without losing market share. They relied on the brand name and hype alone to sell the units.
Obviously we know they abandoned many of the anti consumer policies pre launch due to massive bad press, but the sales numbers have forced them to now abandon the forced kinect, also the weak spec of the xbox one is also likely partically due to this over confidence as well, the ps4 is also weaker than it should be but since its the strongest out there they got away with it (for now).
Keeping bad policies in place just to please early adopters is a bad move to make, if they kept that policy then they would e.g. carried on selling the RROD 360 model all the way until EOL on 360 just to not annoy the early adopters of that generation. The world of technology doesnt stand still, if you buy an electrical product early, you have to 'expect' something better to happen at some point that reduces the value of your purchase.
I said during the launch, buying early doesnt make a lot of financial sense, prices will drop, policies will change, the units will get updated etc. But obviously some people cant wait hence those who brought the consoles. 6-7 months after launch and I still dont find myself craving to get one of these newer gen consoles.
