In future any footage they shouldnt reveal the platform or the resolution. Only display the worst quality footage (e.g. xbox1) and then noone can moan its been downgraded etc. Of course we will still get comparison videos post release, I dont know the solution to that but if all the media companies stopped amking a fuss over it then coverage would be minimised.
When coverage is minimised then developers wont be so concerned about visuals and might concentrate on gameplay more.
reviewtechusa grew his subscriber base by 300% during the 3 months before ps4 launch, he did it by making a video every week about ps4 vs xbox1 specs and resolution.
Pixel count kills performance and isnt that important. e.g. going from 900p to 1080p will barely be noticeable, and only when looking for it. I have experimented in games by comparing high native res with low graphics detail to lower res with high graphics detail, the latter always looks more immerse and more fun. Even more interesting is that 720p with msaa2x has less jaggies than native 1080p with no msaa. But the former uses about 30% less gpu power as well as significantly less vram. In turn that vram saving could be used e.g. to reduce game loading times by caching data. (remember vram is also ram on ps4, is unified) Which in my opinion leads to a better experience.
Why dont devs do this you may ask? because when people hear its 720p all hell will break loose.
