I think this is a two fingers up from both vendors, a all win for AMD.

But the response from all three of you guys who will snap this up proves why these companies are doing this.

With the community split down the middle, I think the amount of sales will be way down on both xbox1 and ps4, but it will be high enough for both vendors to be willing to accept that.

Unless these are just minor upgraded slim models it will signal my exit from the console market. My gaming budget for £60 a game and £400 every 2 years on a new console (which has only maybe 3-4 games in that period for me to play) doesnt stretch that far.

Swanny needs a Playstation 4 if you want to sell it wink i understand where you are coming from and nothing conclusive has been said by Sony regarding this upgrade as they don't answer to speculation or rumours.

Problem is why should we be stuck at a pacific level for 6/7 years when we have the opportunity to have a better spec with more grunt ,more power and better looking games.

Only a handful of games during a console life cycle truly amaze, and these are few and far between.

the reason to be stuck as you put it is to provide longevity to the console purchase, make it good value for money. What hasnt helped the situation is how slow games are been released now as well. The PS4 literally only started getting some momentum in the last 6 months or so, it takes 2-3 years for consoles to even start getting momentum, so they need say 5 years to get 2 years of good game releases.

Good hardware doesnt make a good game, good coding and creativity does.

You think the ps4 is inadequate now for good games?

To put things into perspective.

I got 3 years out my ps3 before it was replaced by ps4 in the market. I have 36 ps3 games. So work out the cost of my ps3 (£80 used + £50 accessories, cables etc.). Divide that by 36 games.
PS4 I owned for maybe 1 year? if ps4.5 coming this fall, and I have a whopping 5 games, wow. What value for money this console has been.
bloodbourne
dragon quest heroes
FF type 0 HD
The order
Disgea 5

This moves to 8 games, if I buy ff15, star ocean 5 and the next kingdom hearts game. All 3 still not released.

PC I have approx 300 steam games, + 5 blizzard games, and 14 physical copy games. Also almost forgot 8 origin games.

But don't you undermine your own argument there?

You get the best of the PS4's ability for the next two years while the new hardware awaits games, and so the cycle continues. I really think it's a storm in a T-cup, but even if you were correct, it's all about the choices we make. I've sold more PS4 games than you have ever owned. It's not a boutique industry, and I suspect your preference of game is just very limited here in the wild west.

As for the PS3, I bought mine at launch, so what's that, 7 years? Even though you cannot possibly argue that it wasn't supported amazingly well, it was way too long for me. Tech moves on and industry pretty much immediately follows if it doesn't want to be left behind. When I buy my next car, my old one doesn't go to the scrapyard. Somebody else buys it, enabling me to afford a down payment on a new one. And all the pattern part manufacturers make millions out of keeping them serviceable. If everybody kept tgem until they fell apart, the car industry would die on its ass and the only offering left would be a "People's Wagon."

It's a whole ecosystem and gaming is no different.

I can't afford to just go out and buy a new console tomorrow morning. I have to justify the expenditure, so this heads up that it's on the way is appreciated. I'd like to be an early adopter, but I won't lose any sleep if it takes me a few more months. I've got a PC that probably already has the new Playstation beat anyhow.

But if I can, I most definitely will. If you could pay £15 a month for the hardware, just like my phone contract, I'd be on it like a car bonnet, no question.

So you have only had a Playstation 4 for 1 year,I've had mine for 2 and a half years,so your extremely late to the party already.

People change there mobile phones every 18 months for better and newer tech,so whats the issue.

Personally and i have mentioned this before,i think we should have a choice when a new console arrives,a standard edition and one with the extra stuff at another price point.

we two different types of consumers.

You are perhaps one who buys something at day one, plays it for a bit and then sells it or trades it in.

I wait on new console releases for prices to come down etc and for enough games be ready for me to play, I keep my games forever as I like to repeat them again and again (if they good enough), if they not good enough to be replayed I still usually keep them for collecting purposes. The PS3 had a poor start in the east and west, and only did well in the second half of its lifetime. The PS4 was considered a success based on hardware sales but has suffered in a huge lack of game releases.

Now I understand your argument which is that there will be games released for the PS4 that are still in development now and perhaps 2-3 years into the future. So yes the amount of games I could own for the platform may be higher then what I have now, but I see no chance of it getting close to my PS3 count of games.

To me there has always been a clear line between console and pc.

Console - longevity, stable hardware spec for 5+ years.
PC - rapid movement of hardware spec, but stable software compatibility so games work across different generations of hardware.

So in that respect both types of gamers are accounted for, because if you dont want a old hardware spec, then buy a pc. The consoles seem to be moving into a sort of hybrid PC model but without the advantages of cheaper games, cheaper upgrades and stable software API.

Look at the end of the day its about choice ,see i could say that being that you wait for a new console price to drop or join the party 18 months after the initial release that your not what i would call a avid true Gamer but one of the casual variety.

A true Gamer doesn't wait for price drops and buys the Console Day 1,I'm exactly what you wrote in your first 2 sentences not Nelly......

So with the Playstation 4.5 or 4K or whatever you want to call it,i will only buy it for one reason only, that Sony tells me its going to literally take me to another level and games will be absolutely amazing looking even 4K ready.

No if this is just a Gimmick for there virtual reality and it will make no difference to the look of playstation 4 games in general.......Then i won't touch it.

In my case it has to be beneficial to me,as i have no interest in virtual reality games and a contraption strapped to my head,so if this is to give there VR games a boost in performance and everything else stays the same, then again I'm not interested.

E3 is going to be interesting to say the least come June.

I personally think this is a general upgrade to counteract the release of the new Nintendo NX.

I think that's the definition of a consumer not a gamer.

yeah that would be a great, pay the premium price for a console with no games smile

by the way we both agree on VR, its a gimmick as far as I am concerned. I am actually hoping this new ps4 is either just with additions for 4k bluray, hdmi or just an integrated VR chip, I would be ok with that.

Be careful what you wish for tho, we may end up with something like this.

xmas 2016 NX leading the race.

spring 2017 sony release ps 4.6 to regain lead.
summer 2017 xbox release xbox 1.6 to regain lead
fall 2017 nintendo release nx 1.5 to regain lead
spring 2018 sony release ps5 to regain lead

and so on

will your wallet take all that? if we about to enter an era where a hardware vendor finds it impossible to accept been last in the existing generation, and has to rapidly release something new it could kill the console market.
