Re: Xbox Scorpio and 4K Gaming.......Really

marketers dont care if its misleading or not smile they just need to shift units.

I might be wrong but given they struggling to do 1080p even at 30fps now I just cannot see 4k rendering except maybe on simple games.

its what your eyes and brain is used to, if you only play at 30fps it will feel fine.

I do think people tend to overhype higher framerates, especially those who claim there to be a big visual difference between say 120fps and 144fps. If I play at 60fps for a few hours and then drop to 30fps in a game, yes it will feel different at first, but then after playing for 10 mins or so I will be used to 30fps again.

Also I think the framerate importance is different on different games, for me driving games, I consider the most important for higher framerates, and also I think game menus should be 60fps, but otherwise for the most part I am ok with 30fps. Also I dont like it when I hear the phrase "upto 60fps", usually thats developer speak for they capped at 60fps but the game wont maintain it and have variable framerate, I always prefer a lower steady framerate to a higher variable one, even on driving games.

The S refresh is going to have 4K upscaling so the Scorpio will definitely be native 4K. I was/am a bit sceptical about whether they can do it by next year given the cost constraints but I don't think it's impossible. My old 770 could run 1440p @ 60fps no problems on medium to high settings. The 980 can do it on ultra. 1440p to 4K is a big step-up though.

Oh I read as well (sorry lost the article now) that older 1080p games that use dynamic resolution scaling could benefit from the Scorpio as well. With all the extra power they'll be able to run at the full 1080p the whole time instead of dropping down when the scene gets crowded. So not sure it's entirely true to say that Scorpio does nothing for you if you don't have a 4K TV.

I personally believe that this is an announcement timed to stifle support for the PlayStation Neo before it gathers a head of steam, rather than a definitive spec.

In terms of 4K, my 380 upscales on a 1080 screen to 4K, although it struggles to lock at anything close to 30 frames on high. More like 20. My 390x doesn't have any trouble at all, but it doesn't look noticeably different. It looks and feels better at 1080 IMO.

I'd agree with Kila that 4K, should be native 4K. The difference is negligible up to 40" screens anyway, so if the game doesn't have an HD texture pack offering, I don't really know if it will be worthwhile.

But if the noise my PS4 makes on games with detailed textures is anything to go by, the Scorpio will definitely need a low power solution in a decent sized enclosure; the Neo is surely going to sound like a jet engine.

Well they have finally ditched the external power brick supply and have gone down the Sony route with this one.

We could be heading for none at all with USB-C according to this article?
