What extension/microfilter set-up do I need...?

[link to this post]

The telephone socket is in the ground-floor hall. The PC and *also* the telephone is located on the first floor, so I have placed a microfilter adapter into the telephone socket in the hall and I have *one* extension telephone cable running from the hall socket up to the first floor.

Into the telephone socket, which is at the end of the extension telephone cable on the first floor, I then have another microfilter here in this. I then have the telephone plugged into this in the

The first filter in the hall is filtering out your adsl signal. Just get rid of it and plug your extension lead straight into the downstairs socket.

Double phone adapter in the hall socket.
one side has a filter into which you plug your hall telephone. The extension lead plugs into the other half of the adapter. Fit another filter for your pc and phone at the other end of your extension lead.

I've tried that setup Motto but it doesn't seem to be working so was thinking maybe I'd just connect a RJ11 to RJ11 Cable (ADSL Extension lead) such as this one...

http://www.edirectory.co.uk/pf/pages/mia.asp?recordid=4051122&cid=880&afid=88888

directly into the ADSLpart of the microfilter in the hall and have this travelling upstairs and going directly into the modem.

Follow these instructions; I have the use of a modem/router, a dial-up modem and a telephone, connected with a 15 metre BT extension lead. It all works just fine.

DOWNSTAIRS
- Doubler in BT Master socket.
- ADSL microfilter in one side of doubler.
- Telephone in telephone socket of ADSL microfilter, The ADSL side left empty.
- BT extension lead in other side of doubler going upstairs.

UPSTAIRS (or other rooms)
- ADSL microfilter plugged into end of BT extension lead.
- Broadband modem/router plugged into ADSL side of ADSL microfilter.
- Telephone plugged into telephone socket of ADSL microfilter. (With the use of another doubler I also have a dial-up modem connected into this socket)

IMPORTANT microfilters must be fitted to all telephone extension points in use.

I use the soap-on-a-rope type of ADSL microfilters. XF-1e Professional ADSL2/2+ Microfilter is my choice for top quality! The very cheap microfilters can let you down. (Read the reviews)

ADSL Nation XF-1e Professional ADSL2/2+ Microfilters, the lowest prices I have seen.

That would work, but you really shouldn't need to. E7er's post is saying the same thing. If you have a downstairs phone as well as upstairs, use their method. If not use mine.

As long as your extension cable is not plugged into a filter your adsl signal should travel upstairs without the need for a second line. Unless, of course, you've got a faulty line or filter.

DSLZoneuk used to have a little digram to help, but their site's borked atm.

Think we need to start at the beginning and check your ADSL works downstairs. It wouldn't be the first time BT enabled the wrong line.

Hi Anon, providing you have all the correct modem/router settings from your ISP, I would think you need to sort your MTU settings as below:

I prefer to find the MTU this way,
Finding the largest MTU by EXPERIMENT version 2

First reset windows with Dr TCP to MTU 1500.
Then reset modem/router to MTU 1500 save it, reboot PC and modem/router.

Next from windows, go to Start/Run and type in, cmd (click OK)
At the MSDOS-PROMPT type,

ping -f -l 1472 www.bbc.co.uk

Then reduce 1472 by 10 until you no longer get the "packet needs to be fragmented" error message or
