I don't mean this unkindly, but if you need to ask you won't understand the answer. Do you know anyone who might be able to help?

unfortunately no, but I'd certainly give it a try...

Someone was telling me that although my pc appeared to connect to the homepage it may have been that the homepage was just cached and so I may not have connected at all, as it was not possible to link to other pages...

That is possible. Hitting the refresh/reload button in your browser would tell you immediately.

Firstly, if you haven't already tried it, follow my original suggestion. Plug your extension lead straight into the socket downstairs, no filter, no adapter, nothing. Check your phone works ok upstairs, if so plug the modem into the adsl socket of your extension and see what happens.

If you get nowhere, there seem to me to be three possible problems

1) There is something wrong with, or complete lack of, adsl on your line

2) There is something wrong with your extension lead/filter

3) There is something wrong with your modem/software

I'd say 2) is the least likely, if your phone's working. 1) you could probably get your ISP to check for you. Also there is at least one site which can tell you whether there's an adsl marker on your line or not, but I can't put my finger on it. 3) probably needs someone with a bit of knowledge. Someone on the forums here might be able to do it for you, otherwise you may just have to get a man in.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

You need to hold down Ctrl while you refresh or you'll be reading from the cache again.

I've figured out some of what E7er meant about Dr TCP.

I've downloaded the top ZIP file here...
http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp

This has brought up a little box entitled "Dr. TCP (Windows 2000/XP). In the bottom right corner of the box I have entered the numbers 1500. I think this means I have now changed the MTU to 1500 as I have saved this change.

How do I now reset the modem to MTU 1500?

The modem is shown here at the bottom of the page...
http://www.talktalk.co.uk/talktalk/s...BOXES.OFFEREXP

It's a Huawei - I think it's a Huawei Smart AX MT882

If you can't get a connection then messing around with the MTU, which may (but probably won't) give you a slightly higher speed once you have a connection, is a waste of time.

a marker only comes into play when an order for broadband is trying to be placed, not after the broadband has been provisioned!!

I was wondering who'd be the first to spot that.

I'm not sure what you mean...what do you mean by "a marker"?
