Download speed

Hi,

I have a Netgear DG834N router connected with Griffin internet (Hornchurch exchange) that is showing a DownStream Connection Speed of 3008 kbps (UpStream Connection Speed 832 kbps ), i use FTP to a lot of different sites that are not restricted yet can only ever manage around 160KB/s does this sound about right? I am sure I used to hit around 400KB/s with my old router which I have given away so unable to swap out and test.

Any ideas?

my router is synced at 1152 Kbps and i get download speeds of 120KB/s. So yours looks wrong.

You should get a maximum of around 288kB/s (2300kbps) from a connection sync'd at 3008kbps.
If you used to get 400kB/s (close to the maximum for a 3500kbps IP profile) something's changed.
You need to sync above 4000kbps to get on a 3500kbps IP profile, so you've lost 1000kbps somewhere.
Have your line stats changed (you can get these from your router)?
Check out your DS noise margin. The default target is 6db. If it's higher than that (maybe 9, 12 or 15db) on re-sync, then that's the problem.

Awful stats for a 34db line. With a noise margin of 15db you should be able to sync a lot faster than 3008kbps.
In any case, a 15db noise margin is usually only applied in response to poor line conditions (too many re-syncs, errors, noise, etc.). You must have a noisy line, or are maybe have your router connected at the end of a long extension cable?

If you have the newer style BT master socket (the split front type), can you remove the lower front half and plug your router (via a micro-filter) into the 'test' socket inside? That will effectively disconnect all other/internal 'phone wiring & sockets, and give you the best possible connection for your line.
Post your new stats (from when connected into the test socket).
If you don't have a newer style master, just plug straight into the master, with all other wiring out of circuit.
Note; Simply disconnecting 'phones from extension sockets will not help, it's the wiring itself that drags in the noise.

Thanks for all the help so far, I have my router connected via a filter that came with the Netgear DG834N and modem cable is only about 2m long. I have tried connecting to the master socket but it is not the new type and the figures are:

Connection speed 3072 Kbps 832Kbps
Line Annenuation 34.0db 17.0db
Noise Margin 15.2db 14.0db

I dont have any other type of phones/sky boxes connected.

Do you have any other telephone extension sockets? If so it might be worth taking the face off of the phone sockets and disconnect all wires on connection 3 & then checking the figures again from the first socket.

Something is causing noise on your line. If it is the ring wire collecting it (connection 3) then disconnecting this should show an improvement in sync. If this is what has caused instability on your line this may be why it has a target margin so high.
