BT - A MOST environmentally unfriendly company!!

[link to this post]

That British Telecom (BT) thro' the operation and management of "Openreach" ("Openreach" is one of BT's group of Companies) must be one of the most environmentally unfriendly and wasteful of British Companies.
1/. That it causes, allows, requires or otherwise its own Openreach Engineers?/contractors to cut off at each end of any underground cable at ground level, (thus making it extremly difficult to get a future "pull out" of that cable), especially when that cable is in a duct.
2/. It appears to have had little or no regard for the Worlds natural resourses in allowing, requiring or otherwise this practice to continue for a number of years.
3/. It allows underground ducts which are a company asset to be blocked and renders in such cases an inability to readilly provide service to customers suffering a rapid reprovide service due to such blockage .
4/. It illustrates a short term approach of Managers and Directors in a maximisation of short term profit to the detriment of long term benefit and calls for a public resignation at minimum of all relivant Directors, without massive or any payout together with suspenion of bonuses to all managers involved, or having participated in such practice.

http://www.telent.com/press/headlines/2007-05-16-preliminary-results.html

We have recently started a trial with BT Openreach for the recovery of their redundant copper network in the Midlands, which we believe could give rise to opportunities for similar activity in other regions.

Actually BT is one of the mopst environmentally friendly companies in the UK.

It has had paper recycling in offices for at least 25 years, it uses recycled paper where possible, has agreement with green energy companies, is funding several wind farms, has intelligent lighting systems wherever possible ... how much more evidence do you want?

And why do you seem to be complaining about BT at every opportunity?

Thanks for that great piece from your knowledge box as we were unaware of that.
I think all will be aware that BT have laid back for too long in regard to this easy way out with its inherent blocking of ducts, short term gain for long term loss. Its sad that with the knowledge of this new recovery trial, they have however not seen fit to stop the cutting off at ground level of old cable since the trial had started.

ducts get blocked where they have broken down etc

so what you're saying is the telcos should go round cleaning the ducts every couple of months?

For someone (Could it be you are sponsored in some way financial or otherwise by BT?) who claims to be an "Engineering Director " Im surprised in such a position you have so much time at all hours and claim to be so knowledgable in so many different directions. In addition the advice you offer is so often so very inaccurate, and not in line with the accuracy and level of assistance that one is used to on this site.

Ducts when they have broken down and are needed for service merely require a dig out and repair after rodding, when not blocked by old cable. It is extremly bad Engineering practice to knowingly and wilfully lead to the blocking of a duct by such bad practice especially cutting off "close" the ends so as to make a future "pull thro'" more difficult and expensive, in addition the time extension so caused by preventing or delaying service to customers who are "out of service" due to the above bad practice is totally inexcuseable.

But then we get people like you moaning that their line is too long (probably because they left a few miles slack on either end)

If they need to extend a cable.. they probably just stick a join on it

It would appear you have missed the point. I am stateing the obvious in respect to BT and these days Openreach cutting off Underground(u/g) cables that have been found faulty and leaving them buried in ducts blocking them up and cutting off the ends so making the recovery extremly difficult or impossible without in some cases a time consuming and expensive removal and especially important so much additional time is lost in putting the poor customer back into service.
Im totally on the customers side. Its a pity the public dont start to use their voice a bit more, The French would drop a few hundred tons of sh 1 t on the steps of the PTT in Paris if their equivalent of BT behaved in this way.. Oh and by the way that above was "sh one t" or whatever you wish to translate it into !!!!
