"This Page Cannot Be Displayed"

[link to this post]

Hi,

I had consistent connection problems for nearly a year using a USB modem, and it was only after asking on here what may help that I purchased a ADSL Modem Router. This has worked perfectly for a couple of months (which has been fantastic), however for the last week or just over I keep getting the "This page cannot be displayed" page. This happens probably 20% of the time when I click to go to a page. Usually if I then press refresh it will load up normally, but it can take refreshing the page 4 or 5 times for this to happen. I don't seem to be losing my connection properly as things like MSN messenger remain signed in and working throughout.

Any ideas why I may keep getting this message?

Thanks very much in advance!

Generally this is related to DNS lookup issues

Oh right, OK.

As an Internet/Broadband thicko is there anything I can do to sort this problem out? Or is there nothing that can be done? And any ideas why it may have started suddenly after a couple of months working perfectly?

Thanks for your reply )

Another area it can be is packet loss.

If running windows try START | RMD then type CMD and press ENTER

then type

ping -n 100 www.thinkbroadband.com

Hopefully no packets will get lost.

If it is DNS you can try a command called nslookup from the CMD prompt, e.g nslookup www.thinkbroadband.com

Try this when things are not working well using the website name, if it is very slow or fails then DNS seems to be the issue. This can be resolved by changing the DNS lookup server you are using.

Should also point out that some routers do get tired and need rebooting, a sympton being DNS lookups fail so worth switching kit off, wait a few seconds and switch it back on

Thanks for the help. No packets were lost when I did that.

Strangely haven't had the problem for the last half an hour or so, but will try the nslookup thing when I do.
