BT playing games?

[link to this post]

This time last year I enjoyed a fairly reliable 5000k profile and could stay connected for weeks. Then come march 2007 things went pear shaped when BT introduced their new fangled video thingy.

My profile sank to 4500k overnight and it became unreliable. To cut to the chase, I left BT after a huge argument and since then I have seen my profile deteriorate to the current 3000k.

Why is this? Simple, I have noise on my line and unless I pay BT

they take the devious option of whacking my SNR up to 15dB

it's a very boring automated system, not a conspiracy.

Don't you mean outdated technology on a 19th century infrastructure? ;-)

Nothing has changed my end, I have top quality filters, cables and modem so it has to be my BT line.

Not doubting you in the slightest, but could BT also not use the same arguement.

I doubt you can find much from the 19th century in today's telephone network.

As for outdated it seems to be the only option in many places.

Very few games need high-speed connections. Most of them just benefit from a low-latency connection. There is a link between bandwidth and latency but it's a pretty minor one. Noise on the line can drag down latency through lost packets and of course if it's so bad as to disconnect it will upset just about any gaming server.

But overall most games will run fine on a 512kb connection. Some of the MMORPGs will run adequately on a modem. I know several people that have played Eve-Online over modems when away from home. You wouldn't want to take part in a major fleet battle but you can do most things.

So overall as a gamer myself I would suggest you let BT's systems increase your noise margin to get you stability. In fact I did exactly that when I joined Be. I was getting two or three drops over the course of an evening so I asked them to bump me from 6db to 9db. My sync dropped from 13.4 to 12.5 and my connection has been great ever since.

The post is about reducing line sync rates not actually playing games (ie the comment is in relation to BT playing games rather than the OP playing games on the connection).
