BT speed tester

[link to this post]

Anyone else aware of the change described in this post?

If correct, one has to wonder what the intention is with regard to future speed problems.

Edit - to remove a reference to FTR because of course that only relates to sync speed.

Hi, yes i get this you have to agree to some things enter your phone number and a service id obviously if you have been given one by BT , and is says at the results any speed between 600k and 7150k is acceptable.

Does it tell you the connection, profile and and actual download speed as well though? The implication by the OP was that it didn't, but he didn't say as much as you have done. You imply it does give a figure, just a "tough luck" statement as well.

It does:

Download speed achieved during the test was - 2777 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :4116 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 760 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 3000 Kbps

I'd love to see 7150 - but it's never going to happen. We've seen a variety of bottom end speeds though, between 400-1200.

Thanks.

So the original was a bit of a false alarm, though that bottom end speed is a bit of an admission of failure to provide capacity.

So much for a future USO of a 2Mbps sync! What speeds will they be able to expect? Or I wonder if this is the start of lowering expectations for throughput from higher syncs so as to free up the backbone for USO and QOS requirements.

Here's another example:

05/09/09 20.27

Download speed achieved during the test was - 2760 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 1000-99999 Kbps.
 Additional Information:
 Your DSL Connection Rate :15320 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 852 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 13000 Kbps

99999 Kbps - that'll be the day smile

I fear so. The signs are that BT under-provided capacity for WBC and are only now addressing it, coincident upon BT Retail launching the product themselves. My own instinct is that the backbone will never receive the investment it requires, leading to increasing problems as more people take to streaming media.

the bottom end speed has always been low - 400k in the past for 2M and MaxDSL.

Who said the USC (not O) was 2M sync ? It isn't even that well defined.

Phil

MaxDSL - goes as fast as it can and doesn't read the line checker first.

Thanks for that Noel smile.

There's been a similar reply in the original thread showing mentioning a "question mark" :-

For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150Kbps ?

Apparently if you click the question mark you get:-

Notes
If your download speed lies in this range then your connection seems to be working fine.

As the poster says - bizarre!
