ADSL2+ BER

Just had my line upgraded to ADSL2+. No problems that I know off, my routers BER test is showing 800 bit error in ten to the ten bits. Does anyone know what error rate is accepted as a minimum. Is my line error rate good, bad or average.

Standard ADSL is designed to have 1 bit error in 10 to the 7 bits at a 6dB margin. So yours would seem to be in the same ballpark (0.8 bit errors in 10 to the 7 bits).

Thanks John, brilliant reply. Just to satisfy my technical curiosity, I saw the speed slightly lowered to get the SNR to 6db. As the evening went on the SNR has lowered. Is this due to increased traffic on adjacent phone lines? Or is there some other cause for this SNR change.

Most routers call it SNR. It is actually SNR Margin, and yes it falls by several dB in the evening and at night. Rises again at dawn.

That's what the margin is for. If the margin was set at 0dB you would get a faster connection, then as soon as noise increased which it does at night you would get a disconnection and reconnection slower.

Most people don't want that.
