Line Speed Regrading, A few questions

[link to this post]

Hi everyone, I hope someone will know the answer to this.

I signed up with a broadband provider who uses "griffin" internet as there provider. Its voipfone broadband.

Now I am connected at 2048kbs, but I was hoping for the full 8 Meg. So I emailed them. They said:

"bt are reporting a maximum line speed on that line of 2000/832 kbps it is possible that even though you are close to exchange that your line is taking a completely different route to your other line you would need to contact bt and ask them why this would be."

So I contacted BT. They said there was a fault at the exchange and 2 days later they rectified it and said all was well.

So I emailed the ISP again and asked them to sort it now, I got this reply:

"Your broadband is already on the max premium service so there is nothing to upgrade you to.

If BT have found a fault at the exchange then your problems should be resolved."

I took my router out for 10 mins and then plugged it in again (the router was powered down during this time) and hoped for a better speed.

I just want to know if the 2048 is the best I can get or if the ISP should be doing something to make the line renegoatate the speed?

Can you post the line stats from your router (attenuation, noise margin, line rate etc)?
These will give the best idea what your line maybe capable of.

There are two or three things to look at.

The easiest first step is to try and post your line stats. See the Kitz line stats link on this page if you need help finding them.

Those will tell us quite accurately what your line is capable of, based on how it is performing now. Your provider will just be looking at a BT database of estimated speeds and these are known to be very unreliable.

Next have a look at the Ring/Bell wire page in the menu on the left of the above link and come and ask anything you want.

Sorry, not meaning to steal your thunder. I went away in the middle of drafting my reply and didn't check for more posts when I got back.

You appear to be on a fixed profile 2Mbps link rather than MaxADSL. Tell your ISP (the 288kbps upstream should convince them).

It tells you that it ought to behave the same as mine since the stats are near identical. That means 8Mb on BT's IPStream and 13.5Mb on ADSL2+ from Be Unlimited/O2. Tell your ISP to pull their thumb out of their backside.

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/1...

That's what 34db gets you with a decent ISP.

Edit:I didn't even need to go back to an archive. Any time I check - I get the maximum possible. Like I wrote - a decent ISP laugh

On the bell wire issue, its a brand new house, are they still likely to wire the bell wire in?

So is a 288 upstream not possible on a MAX product?

It's possible but extremely unlikely. The normal upstream should be 448 for domestic users and 832 for business on MaxADSL.
