Are the Net Police Coming for You?

[link to this post]

I quote from programme description
A proposed new law is threatening to disconnect the millions of internet users who unlawfully download free music, films and TV. Jo Whiley looks at how your broadband use at home may never be the same, and could even be cut off.

Just a question after watching the above, what are your thoughts and opinions on the whole debate of what the government should do to stop illegal file sharing and what measures that you feel are reasonable they could implement to the end user?

The government shouldn't do anything about it as it is a civil matter not criminal.

I am inclined to agree, there will always be stuff changing to embrace any of these changes, like the use of anonymous proxy servers etc as dicussed in the video.

As for internet police, if it goes ahead, you'll be monitored and internet restricted to dial up speeds on first offence and possibly leading to being cut off if continually offending.

yea what you are saying is correct if your 'ip-no' is attatched to media that is copyright protected...

masking your 'ip' is hardly rocket science....;)...........

im not in any way saying that it is right to steal material........but even without new ways to share media it is possible at the moment to download anything u want without being detected.........

http://www.publicproxyservers.com/proxy/list1.html

the above link will give you access to over 500 proxy servers that could be used to obtain material without detection...

give any 1 of them a try and see how easy it is to mask yourself....wink

As some one said they shouldn't get involved but they have,Mandelscum is only involved for personal gain, years from now we will quite possibly find out he is in a top job for one of those music or film companies or some connected business unless it's for some tax free wonga, and this power craving government wanting control of the net

well the die hard pirates won't stop uploading/downloading content, simple,
block the sites,= use of proxies or vpn tunneling use of both the isp would not have any reason to stop/block as are not directly connected to file sharing ect, all this will do is simply hide it,
To speak hypothetically if it was 100% effective and no one was able to download such content as they currently do,
It would be the end of the line for some isp's as customers would be canceling or not continuing to subscribe after their contract term was up,assuming they couldn't get out of such early,as the new measures would constitute a change in service

As for the once again bias view of the bbc again, with the wording"illegal" constantly even before the bill is actually passed, the blind leading the blind i would say sums up some of the comments made by the ministers and one musician who claims that people will suddenly start buying music again, yeh right, err what with?

Plus there would be not much call for faster broadband either, I hope should it get fully passed, all isp's fight it tooth and nail in the courts if necessary as file sharing is not a criminal act so why should isp's give a dam? all this amount's to is Internet dictatorship never mind censorship

Clearly an ill thought out plan not surprising with this governments track record

Faster broadband and copyright infringement aren't necessarily exclusive bed fellows, i'd quite like to be able to transport PSD files that are many GB in size quickly or FTP large files/whole sites, large off site backups become reality stuff like that
