and in the US they often have outages when cars hit poles, or lightning hits the poles. Plus the huge amounts of cable on poles looks unsightly.
The expensive housing estates in the US have all the cabling underground!!

What usually happens is LLU companies rent a certain amount of Backhaul capacity from BT to carry the Data to the nearest POP (Point-Of-Presence). The POP is where the data gets transferred from the BT Backhaul onto the LLU ISP's network (If you are on an LLU Service).
