O2 Wireless Box 2 Running slow for P2P?

[link to this post]

I've recently noticed that after O2 have upgraded their routers, using P2P is going much slower...
I looked at the connection statistics in the router and it returned:
Connection statistics:
-------------------------------------------
Maximum number of connections : 2048
Maximum number of halfopen connections : 2048
-------------------------------------------
Number of active connections : 2004
Number of halfopen connections : 512
Number of expected connections : 0
Number of loose connections : 0
Number of closing connections : 0
Number of idle connections : 830
Number of mcast connections : 3
-------------------------------------------
Number of TCP connections : 953
Number of UDP connections : 1050
Number of ICMP connections : 1
Number of non TCP/UDP/ICMP connections : 0
-------------------------------------------
Number of TCP open connections : 38
Number of TCP established connections : 359
Number of TCP closing connections : 556

Stream cache statistics:
-------------------------------------------
Maximum number of hash collisions : 10
% of hash entries with collisions : 89.06
% of hash entries unused : 2.54

CONN/NAT application helper statistics:
-------------------------------------------
Maximum number of helper bindings : 24
Maximum number of connections with helper : 128
-------------------------------------------
Number of helper bindings : 17
Number of connections with active helper : 6

As you can see the number of active connections is very close to the maximum number of connections.

Would this be the problem that is slowing the P2P down, or is it another thing?

Thanks in advance,

O2 throttle P2P applications
I beg your pardon?

Would you like to specify on which of the four O2 products they do this, and find out whether the OP is using an affected product as well, before making such a sweeping and if meant to apply to all O2 products then also inaccurate statement?

When you say "upgraded" are you referring to the recent firmware change from V7 to V8? If so, mine is still on V7, and I could compare stats with yours.

You don't say if you are using O2 access or LUU? Mine is LLU.

Where do you get the connection stats? and which P2P software are you using?

Try reducing the number of connections on the P2P client. It's possible that the new firmware takes up more memory in the router so reduces the memory which is available for operation and so is struggling with a full NAT table.

Yeah, P2P has been slow for me since the firmware change to V8.
I'm using LLU.
I get the connection stats from Menu>Connection>Stats when using telnet to connect to the router.

I just tried lowering the number of connections in my P2P client from 400 to 100 and speeds have increased, but are still not getting to their full potential...

Here's my connection stats taken whilst downloading a Linux distro using the BiTtorrent client V6.4, which maxed out at 1.4 MBps (pretty much 100% for my 13.6 meg sync). No sign of any throttling here...

Have you rebooted the router recently, or even reset to factory default?

I just rebooted my router and about a minute after booting, the active connections go to ~2000 again...

I have around 15-20 computers running on the network including a web server, could this be the cause of the large number of connections on the router?

My sync speed is 6.7mbps.

Is is possible to downgrade to the V7 firmware?

With 20 machines connected it's going to struggle!!

Home networking products are generally designed for around 4 devices to be connected at once. With 20 computers you'd be better looking at business solutions. E.g. a business router / modem router

Accepting what you say, and certainly at twenty users, it does seem to be the case that the v8 O2 box firmwares degrade some aspects of performance. Several reports on the O2 forum on this site.

The v8 introduction seems mainly to have been to improve the security side of things, so extra executing code and additional memory usage, as already mentioned in this thread, could very well be the problem.

Certainly some O2 users have reverted to v7.

Yes it is possible to downgrade, but not sure if O2 will remotely upgrade it again?

You can get the Ver 7 firmware from the O2 site here O2Broadband_SoftwareDownloads

Would there be any security issues if I downgrade back to the old V7 firmware?

What features does the V8 firmware offer, other than slowing down the router? tongue

I'm not sure what the differences are between V7 and V8 firmwares. I'm still running V7 as I've not been upgraded yet, and there's no way to get V8 other than have it pushed by O2.

You might try posting your question on the O2 and BE forums

O2 are going through changes its not just you. I recently changed my package to include o2 landline and so was no longer on the original o2 upto 8mb pack they used to do. when i was on the old upto 8mb i could download p2p upto 500 kb/s and it was great!
since changing to their new package upto 20mb i can only download at 60kb/s whihc is a absolute joke.
they have no reasons for this except to say o2 are chaning and i cannot tell you too much as i work for o2?

i went to my partners house and use my laptop to download same p2p files and concidering she is on the original 8mb and the old router i was getting 350kb/s again.

the new router is rubbish and they are definitely doing something to slow dow p2p downloads.

Sorry to be unsympathetic to a newbie here, (and welcome in fact), but two points.

First, you have replied to a post from last July with something totally irrelevant.

Second - if you work for O2 I see little excuse for doing a stupid thing like swapping your package unless you are getting ludicrously low price rates for the bundle. The O2 phone offering is only marginally cheaper than BT once you price in the things you get free from BT.

Your problem is highly unlikely to be the router, it is simply the fact that The Basics is specifically designed to be useless for P2P - see the table on this page, as specified in O2's Help pages.

I'm still on legacy Standard like your partner and of course there is no problem.

thanks i just did a web search for slower download speeds on o2, i dont work for o2 the guy said to me since he works for o2 he could not go into too much detail.

but i changed my package as i went from bt landline to o2 by doing this they gave me free broadband for a year upto 20mb which is more than double previous package.

i was expecting to get double fast double download speeds not 1/8 or less, im unsure how this works.

Read Section 4 of the page I linked to before.

Not only are you going to get very slow P2P downloads, I'd be very surprised if 20GB per month will be anything like enough for you.

If you weren't connecting at 8Mbps on Standard, and I think you were nowhere near that, then you wouldn't get any more speed on The Basics. You can see the connection speed in your router status page.

If you are still within 30 days of the package change and phone start you can leave without penalty. You have a 30-day "happiness guarantee".

So migrate to some other broadband if that's the case, (Be Value is your best bet), then you have a short time to get the phone back with BT or maybe you could move that to Be as well, but I wouldn't.

If you join Be through TopCashBack or Quidco you get £35-£40 cashback as well.

I'm afraid you cannot go back on to Standard frown.
