First, they sent out an email with the top 5 who were in the lead, which turned out to be wrong.
Guess what they did now?
2nd e-mail with all of other e-mail addresses in the CC field!!
I'm not happy.
Me thinks Information Commissioners Officer would be interested in this....

It has not affected everyone, since I did not get a copy of this email...

Like you said in the e-mail, they could have stopped it when they realised what went wrong...
Still, can't believe it has happened.

I can, a lot of people don't test things in offline systems first

I am sueing BT for giving out my email address in cc's copy email (I am going to fight BT in court and win a million pound for breaking their data protection act)

you have to prove that a million pounds worth of damage was done, think you would win some money but nothing near 1 million and damages have to be reasonable

Affecting 964 people! I got the e-mail also.

I am sure it's more than 964 because they have sent it in batches.

... a lot of people don't test things in offline systems first Indeed - but always amateurs!
Experienced professionals always check such things. [cough]
 - though I think you mean in test-bed online systems with small user populations. Off-line is usually totally secure from the internet point of view. Until people leave laptops and CDs/DVDs lying around.

If it is the same as the mail I have seen, it was not sent by BT directly but by one of their sub-contract marketing agencies and from a non-BT account. Yes, BT are ultimately responsible, but the agency will be the biggest loser as any fines or costs will be passed on and they may well loose the BT contract.

Hi Guys
BT would like to sincerely apologise for the email which was sent last night mistakenly exposing your email address. This resulted from a mistake made at the agency who sent the e-mails on our behalf, and we and they have taken steps to ensure this will not happen again.
We apologise for any inconvenience or distress this may have caused.
Regards David

I was surprised to receive an email from a thirdparty company.
BT's website says:
" If you want to campaign for your local exchange let us know your details and we'll be in touch."
It doesn't mention another company making contact!

I fail to see how he can lose. A company acting for BT have cocked up, and BT are already apologising for the mistake.
Good luck to him
