VP or ISP congestion ?

[link to this post]

Is there any way to diagnose whether large erratic reduction in download speeds at peak time is due to exchange VP issues or congestion - lack of bandwidth to my ISP ?

My ISP said there where VP issues at the beginning of Oct and some remedial work was done 10 days later , this has improved things a little . but I cannot find any mention of VP issues current or historic on the Plusnet exchange status page.

Daytime download >6Mbps , evening/weekends periods of 1-2 Mbps interspersed with reasonable 4-6Mbps periods. ( used to be down to 800kbps)

I am considering moving ISP but dont want to if the problem is exchange based.

ADSL Max 8128 sync 18db att 12.7db Noise margin very stable.

The usertools at Plusnet's site don't always report it - neither do the VP reports from BT.

Try the BT test usernames - if you see the same pattern on these, it is likely VP congestion. If you don't see the same pattern, it is likely to ISP congestion.

BT test users:

bt_test_user@your_current_ISP_realm
Pass: none

startup_user@startup_domain
Pass: none

Well the Plusnet checker was updated on 22 October, and as you say - nothing showing.

You can also try with this checker. It only works from the phone number so I can't see for you.

It sounds more like congestion within Plusnet somewhere, or maybe you are now being hit more by the traffic management than before? I assume you know about these tables.

My domains, website and mail hosting - Tsohost. Internet connection - O2 Standard.

Sorry my mention of Plusnet was misleading ( just that their exchange tools are useful !) - apologies to Plusnet.

my ISP is ADSL24 Murphx.

Problems started suddenly mid-July - absolutely fine before that.

Nildram status shows:

Congestion status on this exchange is red RED.

Your telephone line has been identified as being on a congested exchange. If you are receiving varying speeds between 400kbs - 2000kbs at different times of the day this is likely to be a result of the congestion issue.
A provisional date of Dec 13, 2008 has been set for upgrading this exchange.

But with 2008 date quoted I do wonder if the data is up to date !

If lots of peple on your ISP are affected around country then ISP congestion on their central.

If lots of people on various ISP's (but maybe not all ISPs) at an exchange are slow, then probably a VP from exchange issue.
