ADSL Training.. On ADSL 1?

Hi, A client of mine has been told by his provider that his dire internet performance is due to the ADSL connection Training.

I thought training was only involved for ADSL2 lines, I'm 99% sure he's on an ADSL 1 connection due to the exchange not supporting ADSL2.

Can someone confirm this please before I go back to him and potentially give him duff info.

Define what is meant by training?

Dynamic line management exists on a wide variety of connections including ADSL, without knowing who the service provider is it is hard to say anything else.

Training can also refer to the sync process that an ADSL modem goes through every time it is switched on, and if it sees a lot of noise and drops the signal it goes through this process again. When doing this re-sync training you have NO internet connection for 30 seconds to 2 minutes.

Though if training is refering to modem dropping line and resyncing this can still happen on fixed speed products.

There is a 10-day period after first connection of an ADSL line after installation. It should not cause poor performance.

In fact if there is poor performance in that period it is best to have it restarted after whatever is causing the slowness has been fixed.

It would be a good idea when you are there to find and post the line stats. It could just be a poor line. See here for help. (That link is in Useful links on my website as well so easy to find when you are there).

Depending on which ISP it is, as others have asked you, a the full results of a BT Performance Test would be useful information.
