Hi,
Can someone tell me what my stats are like please -
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8483 kbps 1040 kbps
Line Attenuation 41 db 11.5 db
Noise Margin 10 db 5 db
Thanks,
Benji.

They could be better but not bad. About how long is it since you connected, and any idea what time of day it was when you did? That can make a difference.
It would help to know the ISP and package, as with some those stats would be as expected and with others better, as I just said.

I'm with BT option 2,connected yesterday at about 11.30 ish.
It's mainly the noise margin I'm concerned about as I've read that BT's default is usually 6dB.

Try a single re-connection.
Do not do several as that will look like instability to the BT system and it will mess you up.
If it was 11:30 at night then that would explain things. If it was 11:30 in the morning, then let's see what a reconnection does.
However - which ISP were you with before and what was the margin then? Or were you at a different place?

It was connected at 11.30 ish Am on Friday ,was with BT before moving house, same town.
Why re-connect do you think I can get a faster connection with these stats ?

Also interestingly the noise margin has just dropped to 8dB, but it is starting to get dark here.

|
The noise margin on nearly all lines falls when the sun goes down, and rises again at dawn, due to the actual noise changing in the opposite direction.
That's why I said a connection at 11:30pm would have accounted for the 10dB margin.
There is nothing to be lost by a single reconnection well inside daylight hours, and possibly a reasonable gain. What is very important though is to take the stats (and post them) as soon as possible after the reconnection, so we can see what the noise margin is at that point.

Today noise margin is fluctuating up and down between +9 and +10 every few minutes and last night I noticed it fluctuation between +8 and -2, which seems strange when it's usually constant at +10 during the day.
So after reading some other posts on here I'm now thinking maybe it's best to leave the router as it is in case I restart it and end up with a lower connection speed.

OK, I took your advice and re started the router at 11am this morning , the new stats are -
Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7759 kbps 1022 kbps
Line Attenuation 40 db 11.5 db
Noise Margin 9 db 5 db
I've lost 724 mb of speed, I wish I'd left well alone now, any ideas how I can get the speed back up ?

700Kbps - hardly a lot, if that is causing you anxiety then ADSL is not for you...sounds harsh, but ADSL works in an ever changing noise environment and as such when using rate adaptive ADSL you cannot expect the same sync all the time.
You appear to have a 9dB target margin, and from your description of night time margin changes you need this level to maintain a connection.
At night the noise that affects ADSL (and no you cannot hear it on the phone) is worse due to the way AM signals proprogate through the atmosphere.
What is the target speed that you are setting yourself?

Hello Mr Saffron, thanks for your reply.
You ask "What is the target speed that you are setting yourself?"
Well to be perfectly honest,I was happy with the 8483 I originally had.
My original question was -
"Can someone tell me what my stats are like please -
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8483 kbps 1040 kbps
Line Attenuation 41 db 11.5 db
Noise Margin 10 db 5 db"
The reply I got was -
1 - "They could be better but not bad" and .
2 - "Try a single re-connection".
I took the advice and lost out , so I'm now asking how do I get back to my original speed.
Thanks,
Benji.

It looks like your Target SNR has been raised at some point - is this something you monitor? The default is 6db which will give you your highest sync.
This should reduce if your line is now running stable - or you can try asking your provider to reduce it (this is sometimes easier said than done!).

Sorry about that , but I think you will find most people here would have agreed with my advice.
As MrSaffron says, speeds can vary each time you reconnect, though to lose 700kbps does surprise me.
What I was hoping for was that the 10dB margin was the cause of you not getting more than your were originally, and that the reconnection would be at 6dB. That would have given a substantial increase.
As MrSaffron says, it looks like the BT DLM has set your connection time margin to 9dB because of the unusually high swings at night.
To lose 700kbps points to a noise margin fluctuating a bit more than you think during the day, and that you reconnected at a noisy time. How are you monitoring the changes in noise margin?
Which socket in the house are you connected to, and are there any extension sockets? Have you got a phone-connected burglar alarm or a Sky box?
